There was once upon a time a child who had Good Luck for his godfather. “I am not Fortune”, said Good Luck to the parents; “I have no gifts to bestow, but whenever he needs help I will be at hand”. “Nothing could be better”, said the old couple. They were delighted. But what pleases the father often fails to satisfy the son: moreover, every man thinks that he deserves just a little more than he has got, and does not reckon it to the purpose if his father had less. Many a one would be thankful to have as good reasons for contentment as he who had Good Luck for his godfather.

  • Mary's Meadow, Snap-Dragons, Dandelion Clocks: And Other Stories

    Juliana Horatia Ewing

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 29, 2019)
Excerpt from Mary's Meadow, Snap-Dragons, Dandelion Clocks: And Other StoriesHe is the nicest dog I know. He looks very sav age, but he is only very funny. His lower jaw sticks out, which makes him grin, and some people think he is gnashing his teeth with rage. We think it looks as if he were laughing - like Mother Hubbard's dog, when she brought home his coffin, and he wasn't dead - but it really is only the Shape of his jaw. I loved Saxon the first day I saw him, and he likes me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Six to Sixteen: A Story for Girls

    Juliana Horatia Ewing

In an "autobiography", Margery describes the many trials and joys of growing up in India and England in the late 1800's. While she becomes an orphan at an early age, her close friend Eleanor proves steady support as she matures from a child to a young lady. She and her adoptive older sister turn to everything with enthusiasm and grace, and learning dressmaking is neither more nor less valued than learning Italian so they can read Dante, or collecting natural history specimens. Work first published in 1873/74, by Juliana Horatia Ewing the prolific author of children's stories. Her tales, which have hardly been excelled in sympathetic insight into child life, still enjoy undiminished popularity. Juliana Horatia Ewing - sometimes also styled Juliana Horatia Gatty Ewing, or just "Mrs. Ewing" - is credited by Roger Lancelyn Green as being the author of the the "first outstanding child-novels" in English literature.

  • Lob Lie-by-the-fire and Story of Short Life

    JULIANA HORATIA EWING

Hardcover (JM Dent, March 15, 1964)
"There lingers over some people whom we know a nameless charm," wrote an early admirer of these stories. A charm like this breathes over the stories which Mrs. Ewing has left as an inheritance for English children, and their elders also for all time." This charm lingers more powerfully over Lob than over any of Mrs. Ewing's books, and wafts us back into a delectable past that recalls Cranford. It is the story of a foundling, and of a Brownie -- of the household elf Lob -- woven together very charmingly in its period setting, and its cleverly drawn characters and plot are compelling and irresistible. There is enough mystery to keep us guessing, but the strength of the story lies in the telling, and the picture it presents of the vanished world of a little country place of a hundred years ago. The Story Of A Short Life was illustrated by Randolph Caldecott.
