I wanted to write stories to which small children could relate; stories about ordinary children. All but one of the stories are based on actual events in the lives of some of my children and grandchildren.Ben’s No-Jeans Birthday Party is based on my own recollections of growing up with food rationing and simple and homemade party entertainments. The Patchwork Pig is the only one involving magic and an element of “don’t try this at home.”

The stories I write are based loosely on events in the lives of my children and grandchildren. The first story in this book is about Jeremy, who appears in The Patchwork Pig, and describes the family’s experiences in setting up a fishpond. The second story introduces our youngest grandchild, Marley, who loves to feed carrots to the family horse
