"Choosing a hero is a serious matter," write these authors in their forward. "One may almost say, 'Like hero, like worshiper.' Therefore we must choose carefully ...... One thing is certain: our heroes must be fighters. But on what battlefield and for what cause?" With deep appreciation of their fellow men who have had dreams and made them come to pass in spite of scorn and hardship, and of achievements which have helped to make life richer, the authors have selected thirty-four men and one woman to represent the heroes of civilization. Their work falls into five classes of human interest - exploration, pure science, invention, biology, and medicine. Much of the material is presented here for the first time in brief and simple form, and all of it is so developed and arranged as to explain both the individuals's contribution and the place of that work in relation to man's progress. The result is inspiring as well as informing, for the authors handle their material so deftly that the reader feels both great and little things - the minor details of life surrounding the heroes as they worked, their qualities of mind and soul, the sweep of time, the enduring character of effort. - flap of dust jacket.
