Here the almos phere is uniformly serene and bright J and, being tempered by refreshing breezes from the adjacent heights, the climate is altogether one of the most salubrious and delightful in the whole world. The second region includes the Tuscan and Roman territories, being screened on the N. by the Apennines, and more exposed to the heats of summer than to the rigors of the winter. Frost and snow are here experienced; but the temperature is sufficient to mature the orange, the fig, and similar fruits. The third district contains Campania Felix, and its dependencies, where the vegetable treasures of nature are also found in the greatest perfection, the air uniformly mil(L, and serene, and a peculiar glow of beauty per vades the landscape. The fourth division extends from the Apennines to the Adriatic, and embraces the southern districts of the peninsula. Here the aloe, the palm, and other productions of ยป south. peninsula with almost every possible combination of hill and valley, rivers, lakes, and romantic scenery. Northern Italy is broken into bold and rugged acclivities by the former, from the southern face of which decsend the streams that form the Po and various other classical rivers. Towards the southern extremity of Italy, the Apennines diverge into two branches, one of which advances eastward to Capo de Leuca, and the other southward to the straits of Messina. Several detatched mountains, among which is the celebrated Vesuvius, here over-hang the gulf of Naples, and discharge their liquid fires into its waters.
