    Joseph Alexander Altsheler (April 29, 1862 – June 5, 1919) was an American newspaper reporter, editor and author of popular juvenile historical fiction. His seven series comprise a total of thirty-two novels, each containing an independent story. The entire French and Indian War Series is very well written and accurate in its details. The characters were well developed and it is an excellent series combining historical fact and adventure with good fiction as are all of Altsheler's War Series.

Born in Kentucky, Altsheler began writing juvenile fiction due to a lack of appropriate stories in the magazines he edited.     “The Eyes of the Woods” is an independent story, telling of certainremarkable events in the life of Henry Ware, Paul Cotter, Shif’lessSol Hyde, Silent Tom Ross and Long Jim Hart. But it is also a part ofthe series dealing with these characters, and is the fourth in point oftime, coming just after “The Keepers of the Trail.”Altsheler was born in Three Springs, Hart County, Kentucky to Joseph and Louise (Snoddy) Altsheler. In 1885, he took a job at the Louisville Courier-Journal as a reporter and later, an editor. He started working for the New York World in 1892, first as the paper's Hawaiian correspondent and then as the editor of the World's tri-weekly magazine. Due to a lack of suitable stories, he began writing children's stories for the magazine.

Henry had conducted himself so well on his first scout and, had shown such signs of efficiency that Ross concluded to take him again the next day. Henry's heart swelled with pride, and he was no longer worried about Paul, because he saw that the latter's interest and ambitions were not exactly the same as his own. Henry could not have any innate respect for heaps of "old bones," but if Paul and the master found them worthy of such close attention, they must be right.
