  • Southeast Asia: The Human Landscape of Modernization and Development

    Jonathan Rigg

    eBook (Routledge, Aug. 2, 2004)
The growth economies of Southeast Asia are presented by the World Bank and others as exemplars of development - 'miracle' economies to be emulated. How did the region attain such status? Are the 'other' countries of Southeast Asia able to achieve such a rapid growth? This book charts the development of Southeast Asia, examining the economies of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma alongside the established Asian market economies. Drawing on case studies from across the region, the author assesses poverty and ways in which the poor are identified and viewed. Process and change in the rural and urban 'worlds' are examined in detail, focusing on the strengthening rural-urban interaction as 'farmers' make a living in the urban-industrial sector and factories relocate into agricultural areas.Giving prominence to indigenous notions of development, based on Buddhism, Islam and the so-called 'Asian Way', the author critically assesses the conceptual foundations of development, ideas of post-developmentalism, and the 'miracle' thesis. In the light of the experience of one of the most vibrant regions in the world, the book places emphasis on the process of modernization within wider debates of development and challenges the notion that development has been a mirage for many and a tragedy for some.
  • The Spears Of Suffering

    Jonathan Wuth

    language (, April 7, 2014)
Fitting in was rarely an option for Sarah, and her father’s job was constantly relocating the family with no input from her. As a result, power and the autonomy it provides were only concepts in her mind, not real world experiences. This radically changed when the sacrifice of a stranger leads to Sarah’s eventual transportation to the world of Qǐ shì. Although resembling the ancient China of Earth, Qǐ shì is exotically different in both celestial anomalies and unique religions. With a new world, comes new power as Sarah realizes that she is being primed to rule a powerful kingdom. The complexities and power struggles of her new found nobility soon threaten to not only take her throne, but her life itself. An underground movement that seeks to do away with her rule and territorial conflict with a neighboring kingdom further exasperates the problem.

  • Ball?!

    Jonathan M. Romig

    (Blurb, Jan. 12, 2020)
When my son first began to talk, one of the first words he said was, “Ball?!” Anytime and anywhere he saw a ball, whether it was a soccer-ball, basketball, exercise ball, or football, he would point at it and say with excitement in his voice, “Ball?!” It was clear that he loved them and so I put together this picture book of different kinds of balls. As he reads through it he likes to point at each and every ball and say “Ball?!” I hope your child will enjoy “Ball?!” too.
