    Jonathan Brown

    language (, Oct. 18, 2015)
BOOKS INCLUDED:------------------Harriet Tubman: The Woman Who Led Hundreds of Slaves to Freedom ------------------Harriet Tubman led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad. These were secret routes that only a few people knew about. Harriet led the slaves through forests and swamps at night so that they would not be captured and sent back to their owners. This would have been the worst thing that could have happened to them. If they were sent back to their owners, they would be severely punished and maybe even put to death.Harriet was one of the best "conductors" of the Underground Railroad. She really knew her way around the secret routes and was extremely courageous. "I can say what most conductors can't say; I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger," she once said.----------Kwanzaa: A Celebration of African Heritage ----------Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday started by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor at California State University Long Beach, in 1966.Dr. Karenga got the idea for the Kwanzaa celebrations after the Watts riots in Los Angeles. He wanted to bring African-Americans together in a peaceful way.In order to create this holiday, Dr. Karenga researched many different African harvest celebrations. He combined aspects of Ashanti harvest celebrations, Zulu festivals, and other African tribal harvest traditions. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza." This means "first fruits" in English.Kwanzaa celebrations often include songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large meal. The Kwanzaa holiday lasts seven nights. On each night the family gets together and a child lights a candle on the Kinara (candleholder). Then they talk about one of the seven principles.-------------------------Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Man Who Dreamed of a More Equal World -------------------------Martin Luther King, Jr., went wherever there was injustice, protest, and action. At the same time, he wrote five books and numerous articles. During this time, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama that became famous all over the world. He directed a peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people and delivered his famous address, "I Have a Dream."-----------------------Underground Railroad: The Secret Road to Freedom -----------------------The Underground Railroad was a name for a network of people, homes, and hideouts throughout the southern United States. It lasted from around 1810 to the 1860s. It reached its peak in the years before the Civil War in the 1850s.Runaway slaves from the South were helped by people belonging to the Underground Railroad, hid in their houses, and were guided through forests and swamps to freedom in the northern United States and in Canada. Was the Underground Railroad really a railroad? No, but it transported people just like the trains in a real railroad. It was called "underground" because it was a secret.
