The Day of the Triffids
John Wyndham
(Doubleday, Jan. 1, 1961)
People innocently watching what had been advertised as a spectacular meteor shower were treated instead to a flaming green hell in the sky. All those who had been looking up that night were blinded, totally, permanently. One brief flare in outer space had effectively brought human civilization to its knees. ~ ~ With billions dead, the survivors trying to cope, and the few remaining sighted persons carrying the weight of the world, another menace arose. Triffids, heretofore a curious and profitable form of plant life, had apparently been mutated by the green fire. Now they were mobile, bloodthirsty, und unstoppable.
