  • Game of My Life Atlanta Braves: Memorable Stories of Braves Baseball

    Jack Wilkinson

eBook (Sports Publishing, April 22, 2013)
Theirs was a prolonged run of excellence like none other in sports history. From 1991 through 2005, the Atlanta Braves won fourteen consecutive division championships, a streak no team in professional sports has ever come close to approaching. Beginning with the unexpected worst-to-first miracle of 1991, the Braves commenced an era of sustained dominance that Major League Baseball never saw coming. From the wondrous run to the ’91 pennant, to Francisco Cabrera’s two-run single in the ’92 NLCS that returned the Braves to the World Series, to Atlanta’s first world championship in 1995, it’s all here. Captured within these pages are those memories, retold firsthand by the players who delivered the Braves to the pinnacle of pro sports, including David Justice, Terry Pendleton, Ron Gant, Lonnie Smith, Jeff Blauser, Greg Olson, and Tom Glavine. But also chronicled in Game of My Life Atlanta Braves are the franchise’s many dark years of mediocrity that set up such a magical run. Dating back to the Braves’ move from Milwaukee, this newly revised book will catch up with Braves legends like Hank Aaron, Phil Niekro, Bob Horner, and Dale Murphy, as well as the more recent stars.

  • New Eyes on the Sun: A Guide to Satellite Images and Amateur Observation

    John Wilkinson

    eBook (Springer, Jan. 5, 2012)
Information collected by satellites recently sent by the USA, the European Space Agency, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Russia to monitor the Sun has changed our knowledge and understanding of the Sun, particularly its effect on Earth. This book presents these findings in a way that will be welcomed by amateur astronomers, students, educators and anyone interested in the Sun. Enhanced by many colour photographs, the book combines newly acquired scientific understanding with detailed descriptions of features visible on the Sun’s surface and in its atmosphere. In the past, observing the Sun has been left to academics with specialised instruments, since solar observation has been unsafe because of the risk of eye damage. This book explains how amateur astronomers can safely observe the various solar phenomena using special hydrogen-alpha telescopes that are not too expensive. Amateurs can now make a positive contribution to science by monitoring the Sun as professionals do. Amateurs can also access the solar images taken by satellites via the internet. This book helps readers interpret and understand what these images are showing about the Sun, including the latest 3D images. Solar observers will enjoy comparing their own solar telescope observations with those produced by space probes such as SDO, SOHO, Hinode and STEREO, and further enjoy learning about transits, eclipses, and space weather and how the Sun compares to other stars in the universe.

  • It Had To Be You:: A Florida Keys Story

    "K" Wilkinson

Paperback (Independently published, Aug. 15, 2019)
Jack and Katharine “K” Wilkinson moved to an area of Key Largo in the 1930s that, at the turn of the century, had been a farming community known as Planter. The newlyweds squatted along the Atlantic coast in a make-shift tent and lived largely off of what the ocean could provide—including furniture that would occasionally wash ashore. In an effort to record what “K” remembered as the best years of her life, she reached out to the friends and family who had ventured down the “Tallahassee Road” to visit. What is revealed through this collection of memoirs, letters, and old photographs is both a love story and a peek into what it was like to live on this island chain before there was running water, electricity, and mosquito control. First locally published in 1996, “It Had To Be You” has been republished by the Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that operates Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada, Florida.
