  • The Modest Tortoise and the Horrible Hare

    John Mill

Paperback (Troubador Publishing, April 14, 2016)
A colourful, heartwarming tale based on the classic fable in a modern day school setting. We follow the story of Modest Tortoise who feels different from the other children at school. He is shorter, his skin a different colour and he has a hard shell for a coat that he can't take off even in summer. He has everyone of us at our most vulnerable, thinking we are not enough. Horrible Hare is the cool kid in school, the one we all wanted to be but he is devious, manipulative and ultimately a bully. The book touches on bullying, self-esteem and confidence and the last pages are filled with open therapeutic questions so that a parent, grandparent or teacher can explore with the child how the story made them feel and whether any parts of the story touched them based on their own lives. We are all born perfect with great self-value and confidence but school life, negative adults and early messages we are told change us and make us question our abilities.

  • Adventures in Handom

    John R Miller

    eBook (Ella's Way Publishing, Aug. 10, 2018)
Peek inside the mind of an autistic kid with the imaginative and creative children’s book, Adventures in Handom. This book is not about autism but tells the story of good versus evil and the importance of having a good heart. Beautiful and whimsical illustrations by the author really helps tell the story he created. My preschoolers have been enjoying “Adventures in Handom” at bedtime. It’s been a welcome addition to our little home library. The boys adore the vivid colors and the fun aliens shaped like hands. John’s story is well paced and engaging — my sons love the message of redemption, and of kindness winning over all. I appreciate that the story has action and intrigue that will grow with them! This is such a fun story by a talented young man who happens to be an excellent role model for my sons. - Gina M, Sp Ed teacher and mother of two, Windham NH“John Miller’s Adventures in Handom is a joy to read. The story of the people of Handom captures the innocence of childhood, with delightful illustrations in brilliant colors. The book delivers the all-important message to kids everywhere that conquering obstacles in life depends not so much on the darkness on the outside as the love that is on the inside. All children, including those with disabilities, will find inspiration between the covers of this wonderful tale of brotherhood, devotion and perseverance.” Peter C Raffalli, MD, FAAP, Child Neurologist, Boston Children’s Hospital/ Asst Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School. Like all distinctively American writers, John R Miller’s subject is grounded in his own experience. In his first book, Adventures in Handom, the young writer explores how his autism enchances his vision of the world we all live in. It is a perceptive, tender, and triumphant book. Jay Atkinson, Author, BU lecturer , Methuen MA John R Miller’s book has evolved from a stim of playing and wrestling with his hands. This is book is the first of its kind where John took his stim/ tic and not only gave it a positive spin but created a whole world Handom.Handom is a small colorful colony on planet H-13 which is ruled by a kind leader Capt. Hank. Brothers Bob and Tony meet their match in Captain Hank’s evil brother, General Arnold when they are separated from their parents during a sandstorm.

The sports of the field, and the pleasures and pastimes of a country life, are so interwoven with the associations of all grades and degrees of my countrymen, that to describe them with tolerable accuracy could scarcely fail to meet with public favour. But in my present undertaking I fear that Ihave less of the actual appliances and means of success to depend on, and must expect to be judged more by the extrinsic attire and circumstances in which I may have been able to clothe and set them forth; besides which, my subjects and characters are of so various and dissimilar a nature, that I can scarcely hope that those readers who may relish any one or more of them will be dis posed to look with favour on the whole.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
