    This is a really good history of the political and social events leading up to and through the Civil War and the reconstruction that followed. The author, John Logan (1826-1886) served under Generals Grant and Sherman and marched into Atlanta and the Carolinas. He later was a Vice-Presidential candidate with Chester A. Arthur in 1884. He became an active Republican legislator following the Civil War and advanced the cause of freed slaves and African-Americans which was often against his fellow politicians wishes
