  • HORSE SHOE ROBINSON

    JOHN P. KENNEDY

Hardcover (JOHN W. LOVELL COMPANY, NEW YORK, March 15, 1880)
If you're into Revolutionary War stories, this one will give you the flavor of how it was. "Horse-Shoe" Robinson was actually my great-great-great grandfather. He was a child when the Revolutionary War began, and acted much like any young boy with daring and lack of fear. He was illiterate, and John Pendleton Kennedy wrote the book and actually had to read it to him before it was published. It was not a collaboration, so we don't know how much is truth and how much is drama, but it makes for a good story. "Horse-Shoe"'s name was not actually Robinson (a detail he would have caught if he could read.) It was James Robertson. (c. 1759-1838) His first home was in Oconee County, S.C., and he later moved to Alabama, building a home near the Black Warrior River, an area now called Horseshoe Bend. He is buried In the Robertson cemetery In Romulus, near his Alabama property. This book has continued to be recommended reading in college many curriculum and his books have been republished for many years.
