"I have no idea what his philosophy is, other than promoting himself."—Kentucky Senator Rand Paul on Fox News, Aug. 9, 2015Upon reading that statement by Senator Paul, this historian found himself to be very interested to know the following:- Is presidential candidate Donald J. Trump a mere publicity seeker whose only goal is to promote himself and his businesses?- Or does he have a cogent, well-argued set of proposals — a platform — that suggests he is a serious contender for the presidency of the United States?More specifically, does he have an actual, detailed plan for his stated goal to “Make the US Great Again”?It happens that he does, indeed, have a detailed plan, which he clarified in a 2011 book with the title, Time to Get Tough: Making America #1 Again. The purpose of this paper is to offer to readers a concise summary of Trump’s platform as expressed in that 2011 book, augmented by my comments as a historian.Presently the leading candidate for President of the United States, Trump recently announced that he intends to state his current platform in the near future. Whenever he does, this historian will either update this paper, or compose a new one, as necessary.Let’s proceed through his 2011 book chapter by chapter. To make the process of reviewing it convenient, I will as much as possible provide bulleted points in short paragraphs.
