He was good enough, however, to leave us undisturbed, and after a long toil uphill, we next day marched into the Jut6g bazar, where the familiar sound of the artillery bugles on the hill above disagreeably recalled to us the facts that our clothes were torn and dusty and that our boots sadly needed polishing if we wished to hold up our heads again in this civilised region. Four miles more took us to Simla, where the world of fashion had been happily consoling themselves during our absence, and where the yoke of civilisation sat somewhat heavily on us after our delightfully free life in the mountains. Nothing can come up to the pleasure of such a march through the Himalayas. Healthy for mind and body, there is food in abundance for varied interests; while the continued life in the open air at these high elevations brings with it an exhilarating feeling of the greatness of God.s world, which is almost lost sight of in the pressure of our narrow and confined struggle for existence in this nineteenth century. INTERMEZZO THE SUB-HIMALAYAS INTERMEZZO A Few weeks. stay was more than enough at Simla, for a summer resort in the winter season loses much of its raison d.itre. • Reading for the Young: A Classified and Annotated Catalog, with an Alphabetical Author-Index

    John Frederick Sargent

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
