African-American teen, Shelby Simmons, dreams of someday becoming a famous author. A talented storyteller of her own made-up stories and clever rhyming that impress her siblings and their schoolmates. Shelby also imagines fame across the river on that 'magical' island of Manhattan that seems so far from her 60s home in Brooklyn. On one particularly hot July 4th day, Shelby is allowed to stay up later that eve to enjoy the holiday fireworks in the neighborhood park with her younger brothers Wade and Todd, while their parents spend the holiday evening dancing on a festive cruiseship ride around the Hudson River. However, Shel is charged by her mother with the responsibility to look after her sibs that evening in the park, and be back home immediately after the fireworks display is over.Soon after the spectacular fireworks has wowed the crowd and come to an end in the park, the balmy air and starry skies above, lull a drowsy Shelby and her sibs into a sleepy curiosity over two odd figures overhead in the distance that seem to be playfully buzzing each other among the starry expanse. Lagging behind in their secret spot after most of the crowd have left the park, momentarily dozing-off in the warm breeze and music of crickets, Shelby and her sibs are soon awoken by the presence of a strange boy and his pixie companion. He claims he's rescued and is returning their 'park pigeon friend' from its long-distance 'bird-community competition,' only, exhausted, to flop down onto his island of 'Misbegot.'. Shelby, ever protective of her younger sibs, confronts this 'crazy-talking kid,' 'M-pee-ta,' until he demonstrates to his unbelieving audience that he and his companion can also FLY!...and instructs Shel, Wade and Todd with a flying lesson 'test-run.'Later, on learning Shelby is a 'storyteller' Mpeta persuades her and her brothers to accompany him back to his island to join his 'Pack' of lost youth. There, wild adventures, unbelievable events, and battles with bandit pirates awaits!…as well a Shelby’s campfire tale of lost identity, forgotten heritage. Is Shelby dreaming? Are the events and adventures that she and her brothers experience on the strange boy's island of 'Misbegot' real, or just another of Shelby's stories she is 'narrating?'LOST BOY'S BACKSTORY: Imagine a captured African boy who escapes, along with other native boys, from a slave ship headed to the New World. They try to row their way back to Africa, but land instead on a mysterious and magical island somewhere in the unknown, unseen Caribbean, where nothing is as it should be, including the natural process of growing up.A reimagining of "Peter Pan," this African-American take on the classic story stands as a metaphor of our historical and cultural experience, past...and present.
