In presenting these Reminiscences to the reader the author wishes to say that they were written and compiled by an uneducated man, who is now 63 years of age, with no pretensions to literary attainments, having a very meager knowledge of the common-school branches. In placing these recollections in book form there is an endeavor all along the line to state the facts as they occurred to me. The tragic deaths seen by the author in dance-hall and saloon have been omitted, in this work. But to that band of hardy, tireless hunters that helped, as all army officers declared, more to settle the vexed Indian question in the five years of the greatest destruction of wild animals in the history of the world’s hunting, the author especially devotes that portion of the book pertaining to the buffaloes. The incidents connected with the tragic death of Marshall Sewall will be appreciated, I trust, by all lovers of fair play. Thomas Lumpkins met his death in a manner that could be expected by all old plainsmen. There were so many tragic incidents that occurred during the author’s experience after leaving New Mexico, that it was difficult for him to segregate one event from another, in order to prepare a presentable book,—one that could be read in every home in the land without shocking the finer sensibilities of the reader. And it is the sincere hope and desire of the author that this design and object have been accomplished.CONTENTS.Chapter I Boyhood in Territory of Kansas, 1857Chapter II, Early Settlements of Southeast KansasChapter III, A Trip to New MexicoChapter IV, "Lost”Chapter V, We Move.—Acres of BuffaloChapter VI Two Hundred and Three Killed at One TimeChapter VII Hides Bound for the RailroadChapter VIII, Indian RumorsChapter IX, The Warrior's Last RideChapter X, The Staked Plains HorrorChapter XII, Sol Rees.—Dull Knife Raid, 1878Chapter XIII, Mortimer N. • The Border and the Buffalo: An Untold Story of Southwest Plains : A Story of Mountain and Plain

    John R. Cook

Paperback (State House Pr, Oct. 1, 1989)
The slaughter of the great buffalo herds of the West took place between 1874 and 1884. The southern herds in the Texas Panhandle were gone as early as 1878. John R. Cook was one of the hunters taking part in the extermination. His book, The Border and the Buffalo, first published in a small edition at Topeka, Kansas, in 1907, is one of the most important first-hand accounts about buffalo hunting that has been written. The organization of hunts, camp routines, and marketing of the buffalo hides are all described in detail. The book also highlights battles with the Cheyenne and Comanche Indians, and various scouts with the U.S. Cavalry on the plains of Texas.

  • Surry of Eagle's-Nest or the Memoirs of a Staff-Officer Serving in Virginia

    John Esten Cooke

Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 29, 2012)
Having returned to Eagle s-N est, and hung up a dingy gray uniform and battered old sabre for the inspection of my descendants, I propose to employ some leisure hours in recording my recollections, and describing, while they are fresh in my memory, a few incidents of the late Eevolution. This will not be a task, my dear, unknown reader rather an amusement; for nothing delights more your old soldier returned from the wars than to fight his battles oer again, boast of his exploits, and tell the children and grandchildren, clustering in fancy around his knees, what wonders he has seen, and how many heroic deeds he has performed. I think those dear, coming grandchildren will take an interest in my adventures. They will belong to the fresh, new generation, and all the jealousies, hatreds, and corroding passions of the present epoch will have disappeared by that time. Simple curiosity will replace the old hatred; the bitter antagonism of the partisan will yield to the philosophic interest of the student, and the events and personages of this agitated period will be calmly discussed by the winter fireside. How Lee looked, and Stuart spoke how Jackson lived that wondrous life of his, and Ashby charged upon his milk-white steed of this the coming generations will talk, and I think they will take more interest in such things than in the most brilliant arguments about secession. Therefore, good reader, whom I will never see in the flesh, I am going to make some pictures, if I can, of what I have seen.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings.
