    John Stewart

Paperback (Firebird Press, April 30, 1999)
Seventy-five individuals of varying ability, vision, and leadership capabilities have served as governor of Alabama during three centuries as an organized governmental entity. This volume, the work of one of Alabama's best-known writers, traces the evolution of the modern state through the lives, philosophies, and achievements of those who have held its highest office. This collection of biographies, documenting the efforts of governors under French, British, Spanish, and American dominions, provides the background from which the modern state of Alabama has emerged. This volume contains, for the first time in any publication, photographs and portraits of sixty-five Alabama governors. The most comprehensive chapter focuses on George Wallace, three-time governor of the state and an influential force in national and presidential politics for many years. Author John Craig Stewart, novelist and historian, has written extensively on the subject. He is co-author of Know Alabama, a history text used in Alabama since 1957. He is also director of creative writing at the University of South Alabama.

  • Quicksands

    John Alexander Steuart

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, March 6, 2018)
Excerpt from QuicksandsWhen important people condescend upon acts of benevolence which are lightly esteemed they have a right to feel annoyed. All Lady Stapleton's breeding was not proof against the irritating sense of rudeness and impropriety, that increased momentarily, as she waited without greeting or explanation. First she crinkled her calm brows, then tapped impatiently with her fan, and finally sat bolt upright with unmistakable signs of displeasure.I don't understand it, she remarked, looking round the company with an eye of resentment. I don't understand it at all. Instantly, like a forest of autumn leaves, the assemblage of silks rustled and murmured in agreement that what puzzled Lady Stapleton was past finding out, and, moreover, 'in this instance smoked unpleasantly of insult. Here they were, leaders of fashion, devotees of pleasure, assembled at once by invitation and as an act of patronage, yet neither host nor hostess appeared to welcome them. It was enough, they felt, to justify them in washing their hands forever of all deeds of charity.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from In the Day of Battle: A RomanceAt length I tore the envelope and read the letter. The effect was as if a fevered man were to plunge into an icy flood and have all his flaming currents chilled in an instant. I seemed to have passed in a moment from one extreme Of horror to the other. I had leaped, in the words Of our poet, from hell-heat to arctic cold from the region of anger into that Of despair; and for a while I was paralysed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
