    * Digitally remastered color illustrations (kid-friendly)* Clean table of contents for easy browsing* Fonts optimized for display on Kindle and other e-readersJoel Chandler Harris (December 9, 1845 – July 3, 1908) was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia, where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years. He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution."Joel Chandler Harris, in writing his stories, recreated the dialect he remembered when he lived at a plantation in Georgia in 1862. During the four years he spent there, he was a frequent visitor to the slave quarters, feeling comfortable and gaining love and respect for the African-American people living there. He patterned Uncle Remus after a couple of elderly black storytellers and went on to write innumerable stories about the adventures of a pesky rabbit and his animal friends and enemies. Some were as the elders told them, others he created. With a bit of imagination, his stories are well-suited for improvisation by the reader and children seem as entranced by the language as they are about the characters and their adventures."

  • Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit

    Joel Chandler Harris

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 16, 2014)
Brer Rabbit is the main character of the Uncle Remus stories, a likable character prone to tricks and trouble-making who is often opposed by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. In one tale, Br'er Fox constructs a lump of tar and puts clothing on it. When Br'er Rabbit comes along he addresses the "tar baby" amiably, but receives no response. Br'er Rabbit becomes offended by what he perceives as Tar Baby's lack of manners, punches it, and becomes stuck. Br'er Rabbit is a trickster who succeeds by his wits rather than by brawn, provoking authority figures and bending social mores as he sees fit.The stories have inspired at least three feature films. The first and best known is Walt Disney's 'Song of the South,' released in 1946. The film was a combination of live action and animation. Ralph Bakshi's 1975 film 'Coonskin' is a satire of the Disney film that adapts the Uncle Remus stories to a contemporary Harlem setting. 'The Adventures of Brer Rabbit' is a 2006 direct-to video production which has hip-hop influences. An 'Uncle Remus and His Tales of Br'er Rabbit' newspaper strip ran from October 14, 1945, through December 31, 1972.All ten Uncle Remus Brer Rabbit adventures are collected here:BRER RABBIT’S FROLICBROTHER BEAR’S BIG HOUSEBRER RABBIT TREATS THE CREETURS TO A RACEBRER RABBIT’S FLYING TRIPBRER RABBIT AND THE GOLD MINEBRER RABBIT GETS BRER FOX A HOSSBRER RABBIT FINDS THE MOON IN THE MILL PONDHOW MR. • STORIES OF GEORGIA

    Joel Chandler Harris

eBook (Abela Publishing, Jan. 6, 2019)
From the storyteller behind the Uncle Remus stories comes a young person's history of Georgia. Herein are 27 stories about prominent people and events in the History of the State of Georgia which stretch from the Spanish explorations of De Soto through the founding of the Georgia Colony, the War of Independence and the American Civil War to the post war peace. These stories are accompanied by 45 pen and ink illustrations by an unknown artist. Today, more than one hundred years later, the timeless appeal of these stories makes them an interesting and valuable item of Georgiana. Some of the stories in this volume are:A Search For Treasure.Oglethorpe And His Gentle ColonyThe Empress Of GeorgiaAunt Nancy Hart.A Negro Patriot. The Yazoo FraudThe Cotton Gin.The Creeks And The Creek WarTwo Famous Indian Chiefs.A Queer Case.Georgia Wit And Humor.Slavery And Secession.Georgia In The War.A Daring Adventure. The Reconstruction Period. In preparing the pages in this volume, Joel Chandler Harris (1848 – 1908) has had in view the desirability of familiarizing the Citizens of Georgia with the salient facts of the State's history in a way that shall make the further study of that history not only interesting, but also a delight. The characterizations herein were for the first time brought together from many sources which, at the time, were little known and, at the time, out of print. However, the history of Georgia from 1896 (when this book was published) until the present now exists in altogether different locations. Considering Chandler-Harris compiled and penned this volume aged about 35, here’s an opportunity for a budding young author to add an addendum and bring this volume up to date….10% of the publisher’s profit will be donated to Charities.-------KEYWORDS/TAGS: Stories from Georgia, Joel Chandler-Harris, action, active, adventure, Adams, American, American Civil War, Andrews, army, attack, Augusta, Mary Aunt Nancy, Austin, Bosomworth, Brer Rabbit, British, Brown, Bunkley, camp, Captain, Carolina, charge, Cherokees, Clarke, Colonel, colonists, Colony, commander, condition, Congress, convention, cotton gin, County, courage, Crawford, Creeks, declare, dollars, Dooly, duty, Elijah, England, expedition, Florida, Fuller, General, Georgia, Government, Governor, history, war of independence, Indians, Jackson, James, Judge, King, Legislature, Liberty, locomotive, Longstreet, Major, march, Matthews, McGillivray, Mcintosh, militia, Mississippi, money, movement, nationhood, negroes, North, officers, Oglethorpe, peace, President, Province, queen, Revolution, River, Robert, Sallette, Savannah, secession, slaves, soldiers, South, Spaniards, spirit, State, Thomas, Toombs, Tories, Railway train, USA, Uncle Remus, United states, villages, Washington, Whitney, William, wounded, Yazoo Fraud
  • Stories Of Georgia

    Joel Chandler Harris

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 15, 2014)
In preparing the pages that follow, the writer has had in view the desirability of familiarizing the youth of Georgia with the salient facts of the State's history in a way that shall make the further study of that history a delight instead of a task. The ground has been gone over before by various writers, but the narratives that are here retold, and the characterizations that are here attempted, have not been brought together heretofore. They lie wide apart in volumes that are little known and out of print. The stories and the characterizations have been grouped together so as to form a series of connecting links in the rise and progress of Georgia; yet it must not be forgotten that these links are themselves connected with facts and events in the State's development that are quite as interesting, and of as far-reaching importance, as those that have been narrated here. Some such suggestion as this, it is hoped, will cross the minds of young students, and lead them to investigate for themselves the interesting intervals that lie between.

  • Tar Baby

    Joel Chandler Harris

Paperback (Creation Books, Aug. 16, 2000)
Tar Baby, casually published in 1877, found Joel Chandler Harris his vocation. The book was to become an American classic and Harris was to become a key figure in the development of black literature. Now republished and repackaged by Creation Books, Tar Baby transports the reader to the Georgia swamplands and plantations, and the pre-Looney Toons world inhabited by sassy, talking beasts. Here, Brer Rabbit is the wily hero - duelling both verbally and physically with those who would eat him - and perpetually in the monstrous shadow of the Tar Baby. Tar Baby, in its original African-American dialect, is a collection of some of the finest of these colloquial tales which frequently verge on the surreal and the grotesque. It is presented as a classic of American literature for both adult readers and children of all ages.
