  • The Restoration and the England of Charles II

    John Miller

    Paperback (Routledge, May 31, 1997)
This key Seminar Study was first published as Restoration England: The Reign of Charles II in 1985. Unavailable for several years, the book has now been heavily revised, and expanded, to take account of over ten years of new scholarship. In particular, the Second Edition reflects new work done on political parties, the constitution, taxation, the church, and the legacy of the civil wars. As ever primary documents illustrate points raised in the text and an extensive bibliography directs readers to further reading. New for this edition is a chronology of the main events in Charles II's reign which, given the thematic treatment of the reign, readers are likely to find particularly useful. When Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660 the event was widely greeted as a return to normal after the upheavals of civil war. In this short study Professor John Miller explores how far this was true and how far the civil wars had, in fact, weakened (or strengthened) the monarchy. The book divides neatly into two: in the first part the 'Restoration Settlement' of 1660-4 is examined in detail; and, in the second, the salient features of government, politics and religion under Charles II are considered, seeking to show how well the restored regime worked in practice. Throughout, complex issues of change over time are explained as clearly and concisely as possible and the Restoration is placed in the wider context of the development of England in the seventeenth century.

    Jana Miller

Paperback (Independently published, June 23, 2019)
Suspense and mystery meets heartfelt humor and friendship in this time manipulation fantasy.Chloe has always used her ability to rewind time to keep her life mistake-free and blame-free, flying under the radar as much as possible. But when the golden strands she uses to manipulate time start zapping her mind with erratic sparks, she and her friends are forced to investigate. Family secrets dating back more than a hundred years mark the trail of an ancient amulet being hunted by someone who will stop at nothing to strip Chloe of her ability, even if it means erasing Chloe’s life altogether.Soon Chloe is faced with heart-wrenching decisions and the question she’s been avoiding for seven years: does this extraordinary ability give her any right to manipulate other people’s lives?Springback is a contemporary fantasy full of magical realism for teens and tweens—a unique twist on time travel, parallel universes, and time loops. More than just a mystery about supernatural abilities, it’s a coming-of-age adventure about being real, forgiving yourself, and making tough choices.“Chloe's life at 16 should simply revolve around school, friends, and maybe a boy, but it doesn't. Instead, it revolves around springing backwards in time, covering up little mishaps [and] embarrassing moments, and suddenly discovering that the senior boy in her creative writing class is able to do it, too. If that were all she needed to deal with, life could continue as she knows it… but there are others who possess the same ability, and one of them is determined that Chloe and her ancestors never obtain this skill and will stop at nothing to get her way--after all, murder is nothing when you can rewind time.” - Cindy Gritton, Amazon Reviewer

As a young new leader takes a strange and—at times—horrifying interest in her, will she be capable of discovering the reasons behind his actions and orders? In a world where nothing is as it seems and all things are never anywhere near as simple as they appear at first glance, will she be capable of making the distinction between what is real and what is not?
