  • Acorn Warriors -- Book One: The Dragonnade

    Rob Franklin

Perfect Paperback (Tate Publishing, March 2, 2010)
Sir Randolph's forest has many faces. And they're not all changing for the better. Today Randolph and the other members of the council of Roxford will discover why. But whose blood will yet flow for the sake of liberty? Will the innate desire for freedom be enough to turn peace-loving red squirrels into warriors? Will they discover the traitor in their midst before it is too late? Will their own character shine forth as refined and precious jewels, or will they too, be found wanting? Across the border the gray squirrel dictator makes plans to profit from Roxford's abundance by whatever means necessary. And he's hired crows. Now Roxford finds itself struggling for its very survival while forging a state of its own. Sir Randolph and the governor, Rafael, will confront the tyrant of Gray Forest and the dark peril, MythMahada, before their fight to preserve their way of life is through. Follow Sir Randolph and the rest of the red squirrels as they embark on the quest of a lifetime and become Acorn Warriors. In the first installment of Rob Franklin's antic series, it isn't just adventure, it's life.

  • Smonk

    Tom Franklin

    Paperback (WmMorrow, Feb. 20, 2007)
It's 1911 and the secluded southwestern Alabama town of Old Texas has been besieged by a scabrous and malevolent character called E. O. Smonk. Syphilitic, consumptive, gouty and goitered, Smonk is also an expert with explosives and knives. He abhors horses, goats and the Irish. Every Saturday night for a year he's been riding his mule into Old Texas, destroying property, killing livestock, seducing women, cheating and beating menโ€”all from behind the twin barrels of his Winchester 45-70 caliber over and under rifle. At last the desperate citizens of the town, themselves harboring a terrible secret, put Smonk on trial, with disastrous and shocking results. Thus begins the highly anticipated new novel from Tom Franklin, acclaimed author of Hell at the Breech and Poachers. Smonk is also the story of Evavangeline, a fifteen-year-old prostitute quick to pull a trigger or cork. A case of mistaken identity plunges her into the wild sugarcane country between the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers, land suffering from the worst drought in a hundred years and plagued by rabies. Pursued by a posse of unlikely vigilantes, Evavangeline boats upriver and then wends through the dust and ruined crops, forced along the way to confront her own clouded past. She eventually stumbles upon Old Texas, where she is fated to E. O. Smonk and the townspeople in a way she could never imagine. In turns hilarious, violent, bawdy and terrifying, Smonk creates its own category: It's a southern, not a western, peopled with corrupt judges and assassins, a cuckolded blacksmith, Christian deputies, widows, War veterans, whores, witches, madmen and zombies. By the time the smoke has cleared, the mystery of Smonk will be revealed, the survivors changed forever.

  • Little Bessie, the careless girl

    Josephine Franklin

    (, May 27, 2020)
Nine-year-old Bessie is the hardworking daughter of a widow, who lives out in the country. Her mother sells quilts to neighbours, and does whatever it takes to make ends meet. But, like many of her neighbours, she is extremely poor. And the water from the stream often makes the locals sick with fever. Bessie soon discovers that she can make a meager amount of money selling watercress that grow on her property. It is not much, but gives her and her mom a bit of money to get through the brutally cold winters. Bessie and her friends often forage for nuts in the dense woods, and their friend teaches them how to fish at the pond. And that is where Bessie and her friends meet the mischievous squirrel, who causes them trouble.
