The summer of 1969 is a troubling yet exciting time for 14-year-old Kyle Phillips. He is waiting eagerly for the upcoming Apollo 11 moon mission. Soon, a man will finally walk on the surface of the moon. But there is trouble at home. His father is very sick and soon may die. His 18-year-old brother, Kevin, is being drafted into the armed services, and his oldest brother, Eddie, has already run off to Canada to avoid fighting in the Vietnam War. Kyle and his family have not seen or heard from Eddie in three years. Kyle desperately wants to get word to Eddie to let him know what is happening at home. With the help of Melissa (his best friend) and Gordy Milner (a local Vietnam War hero), Kyle tries to get a message to Eddie. Through all the turmoil, Kyle waits anxiously to see the first man to walk on the moon.
