  • Viking Tales: Illustrated

    Jennie Hall

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 2, 2016)
We follow the fortunes of Harald from the time he is given his own thrall at the cutting of his first tooth, through his exploits as a viking adventurer, to his crowning as King of Norway. Then population pressures at home and eagerness for adventure and booty from other lands combine to drive some of the bolder Vikings to set forth from their native land. Sailing ever westward across the Atlantic, they hop along the chain of islands that loosely connects Norway with America in search of home and adventure. "Nights were long in Iceland winters of long ago. A whole family sat for hours around the fire in the middle of the room. That fire gave the only light. Shadows flitted in the dark corners. Smoke curled along the high beams of the ceiling. The children sat on the dirt floor close by the fire. The grown people were on a long narrow bench that they had pulled up to the light and warmth. Everybody's hands were busy with wool. As the family worked in the red fire-light, the father told of the kings of Norway, of long voyages to strange lands, of good fights."

  • Viking Tales

    Jennie Hall

    Hardcover (Blurb, May 22, 2019)
Illustrated by Victor R. Lambdin. A sparkling account of Viking adventures, culture, and religious beliefs, which is focused around the story of Harald Fairhair, first king of Norway (c. 850-c. 932), but also draws upon the Sagas and other sources to produce a highly satisfying-and entertaining-view of Viking life. The first section tells of Harald's wild youth and the power struggle which led to the unification of Norway and his ascension to the throne-an event which sparked a renewed wave of Viking invasions as dissidents left Norway to create new settlements in France, Greenland, Iceland, and elsewhere. The second section tells the fascinating stories of Eric the Red and Leif Ericsson, and their adventures in "Wineland" in North America. Along the way, the narration reveals many details of Viking culture, religion, and lifestyles, including their approach to war, peace, women, societal organization, life after death, and much more. Finally, it ends with a Norse pronunciation guide and suggestions for deeper reading. This is a perfect introduction to the age of Vikings, their adventures and beliefs, and is suitable for all ages. This new edition has been completely reset, but retains the beautiful and intricate illustrations and page decorations from the original.

How is this book unique?Font adjustments & biography includedUnabridged (100% Original content)IllustratedAbout Viking Tales by Jennie HallNights were long in Iceland winters of long ago. As the family worked in the red fire-light, the father told of the kings of Norway, of long voyages to strange lands, of good fights. And in farmhouses all through Iceland these old tales were told over and over until everybody knew them and loved them. Men who could sing and play the harp were called "skalds," and they called their songs "sagas." Eventually these stories were written down on sheepskin or vellum so that we can enjoy them today. We follow the fortunes of Harald from the time he is acknowledged by his father as a baby and given his own thrall at the cutting of his first tooth, through his exploits as a viking adventurer, to his crowning as King of Norway. It is when Harald is King of Norway that population pressures at home and eagerness for adventure and booty from other lands combine to drive some of the bolder Vikings to set forth from their native land. Sailing ever westward across the Atlantic, they hop along the chain of islands that loosely connects Norway with America-Orkneys and Shetlands, Faeroes, Iceland, and Greenland. It is from link to link of this chain that the characters in our story sail in search of home and adventure. Discoveries are made by accident. Ships are driven by the wind into unknown ports, resulting in landings and settlements in Iceland, Greenland, and America. The crude courage of these men and strangeness of their adventures appeal strongly to children, while their love of truth, hardy endurance, and faithfulness to the promised word make them characters to emulate.
  • The Viking Tales

    Jennie Hall

eBook (Start Publishing LLC, Dec. 12, 2012)
Jennie Hall is most noted for her fascinating travel memoirs of the late eighteenth century. She produced vibrant narratives and brilliantly vivid descriptions that have made her popular among readers who wish to be transported into another area or time period. Her "Viking Tales" is an excellent example of that. The story follows the life of the Viking Harald from infancy to his crowning as King of Norway. It focuses on the Vikings' eagerness for adventure and new lands as they set forth from Norway and sail westward across the Atlantic, island-hopping on their way to America. The legends of these men were passed down through generations of families, while they sat around the fireside on bitterly cold winter nights playing harps and working with wool. This adventurous book will entertain young and old readers alike as they take a look at the lifestyle and world view of these mysterious people.

    eBook (, Sept. 12, 2013)
The Vikings (from Old Norse víkingr) were seafaring north Germanic people who raided, traded, explored, and settled in wide areas of Europe, Asia, and the North Atlantic islands from the late 8th to the mid-11th centuries. The Vikings employed wooden longships with wide, shallow-draft hulls, allowing navigation in rough seas or in shallow river waters. The ships could be landed on beaches, and their light weight enabled them to be hauled over portages. These versatile ships allowed the Vikings to travel as far east as Constantinople and the Volga River in Russia, as far west as Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland, and as far south as Nekor. This period of Viking expansion, known as the Viking Age, constitutes an important element of the medieval history of Scandinavia, Great Britain, Ireland, Russia, and the rest of Europe.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 26, 2018)
Viking Tales...This is a charming little book narrating the tales of two of the greatest Viking leaders in History. The journey starts in Norway with the birth of Harald Finehair, son of Halfdan the Black. Harald was the one who united the lesser kingdoms of Norway and formed a united, powerful nation. The rejection of his marriage proposal by princess Gyda unless he became a great king and the vow that he would not cut or comb his hair until he had defeated all his enemies are the most well-known parts of his legend.
