    Jon Franklin

    Paperback (Plume, Sept. 1, 1994)
The new "nonfiction"—the adaptation of storytelling techniques to journalistic articles in the manner of Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, and John McPhee—is an innovative genre that has been awarded virtually every Pulitzer Prize for literary journalism since 1979. And now Jon Franklin, himself a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and undisputed master of the great American nonfiction short story, shares the secrets of his success. Franklin shows how to make factual pieces come alive by applying the literary techniques of complication/resolution, flashback, foreshadowing, and pace. He illustrates his points with a close analysis and annotation of two of his most acclaimed stories, so that the reader can see, step-by-step, just how they were created. This lively, easy-to-follow guid combines readability and excitement with the best of expository prose and illuminates the techniques that beginning journalists—and more experienced ones, too—will find immensely helpful:Stalking the true short storyDrafting an effective outlineStructuring the rough copyPolishing like a proand the tips, tools, and techniques that will put your stories on the cutting edge
  • A Place Called Copperas Mountain

    Jeff Franklin

    language (, May 6, 2010)
A 30,000 word novel about the first romance of life's experience through two youths, who love esoteric concersation, music, physics, theology, Einstein, American Indian and European history, and each other, culminating through that first kiss - captured forever by a legend of ancient folklore. Meet Jensen and Valeria, two youths hardly knowing they're close to adolescence, a tenor and an alto in an American youth choir. They first meet on a dangerous spelunking outing, and despite Jensen's infinite, toxic shyness, they discover attraction between them is growing, whether in or out of their choir class. The affinity increases during the choir's singing tour in Europe. But conflicting forces (both internal and external) work throughout, especially in Europe, which not only separate the couple, but nearly kill them as well. Finally, back in America near novel's end, by coincidental accident, a kiss seals their love forever by being captive in a legend of ancient American Indian floklore - a forgotten legend told to the couple in the beginning by an old timer. From a year out of adolescence, a flashback till the final chapter of this novel - it's a fusion of psychology, science, fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, adventure and mystery all rolled into one - building a story which heralds the splendor of youthful love's vigor - culminating in the final chapter. Perhaps we, of all ages, should take lesson from that tender time of natural innocence....

  • The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

    Franklin B.

    eBook (Aegitas, March 21, 2016)
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them. There are actual breaks in the narrative between the first three parts, but Part Three's narrative continues into Part Four without an authorial break (only an editorial one).
