  • Masterpieces of the World's Best Literature

    Jeannette L. Gilder

Hardcover (Classic Pub Co NY, March 15, 1910)
This anthology is the least expensve work of its class. and differs from its predecessors in aiming less at quantity than at quality. The Editor's plan has been to give copious extracts from the writers of admitted eminence, rather than briefer selections from a host of the lesser lights of literature. The author doesn't always know what are his best selections, but the Editor is inclined to think that whose who have named the selections by which they prefer to be represented here have chosen wisely and the Editor gives sincere thanks.

Excerpt from Masterpieces of the World's Best LiteratureMost of the anthologies are costly. To own them, one must pay many dollars; not, per haps, more dollars than they are worth, but more dollars than one may find it convenient to spare. The anthology to which this is the foreword is the least expensive work of its class. That is one of its two best reasons for being. The other is that this one differs from its predecessors in aiming less at quantity than at quality.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 25, 2018)
Excerpt from The Tomboy at WorkMen must work and women must weep was a line that was quoted to me every time 'i expressed a determination to make rry own living, and, incidentally, that of others. A stupid line, I thought it. Why should men have all the fun of working, while the women stayed at home and wept? The sentiment did not appeal to me at all. I had no inclination for weeping, and I had a decided inclina tion for working.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
