After Gary and his dad endure the long twelve-hour trip and arrive in Africa, Gary is amazed that some people live in huts without running water, electricity, heating or air conditioning. He is amazed that the women of the village carrywater from the river and this unclean water often makes them sick. He notices that his dad's purpose is to help thesick people in Africa who suffer in many ways. When Gary and his dad give away shoes to the children of the village, Gary is happy to do this, but sad when the shoesupply runs out and there are still needy children asking for shoes. When the supply of 200 teddy bears also runs out, thereis a small boy with a lame leg who asks if there are any bears left. He hopes he is not too late, as his lame leg prevented himfrom walking quickly. Gary looks at the small boy's sad face and at his lame leg. To his Dad's surprise Gary announces hewill give the small boy his own favorite bear. When the small boy receives the gift, he is delighted beyond words. He saysthat God sent Gary to him that very day to show him His love. Gary returns to his dad waiting in the truck and asks him why he felt happier giving away that bear than receiving all thegifts on his birthday. Gary's dad helps Gary understand the joy of giving is sharing God's love. Gary vows that when he returnshome, he will send his shoes and toys to the mission.
