Early environment sometimes paints colors on the canvas of one's later life. Fifty years ago in western New York, there were thousands of acres of valuable timber. The country was well watered, and, on some of the streams, mills and factories had sprung into existence. On one of these were three sawmills of one upright saw each, and all did custom sawing.

Ten lessons have students build vocabulary, study character development and point of view, examine inferences, research, and role-play. Students also focus on loneliness as a major theme, write letters to an advice columnist, and use the events in the story to explore human relationships, particularly the skill of listening and the relationship between self-esteem and caring about others.
