This book is the first volume of a two-volume text on mathematics for engineering students in universities and polytechnics, for use in the second and subsequent years of a first degree course. The text is primadly designed to assist engineedng undergraduates and their teachers, but we hope it may also prove of value to students of other disciplines that employ mathematics as a tool, to mathematicians who are interested in applications of their subject, and as a reference book for practising engineers and others. Volume J covers mathematical topics which most engineedng students are required to study; Volume 2 deals with more advanced subjects which are often available as options in the later stages of an undergraduate course. The text is based on courses in mathematics given by the authors to the engineedng students of the University of Nottingham. These courses have evolved over the last sixteen years, and have been developed in close consultation with our fellow teachers in the engineering departments of the University. In preparing the text, we have kept in mind the constraints imposed by the normal three or four year undergraduate course, and we believe that the choice of matedal in the two volumes is realistic in that respect. A new writer, and self-publishing, we all have to start somewhere and this collection of short stories are for a family readership and were first created in 2016. The four stories are independently told. However, they all have a common theme of fantasy fairy-tale, magic, with a sense of humour. In 2018 I collected the stories for children together, because this is something you can do when choosing to self publish. 1. Goblin Boots - The tale tells of a Boot Maker, a Goblin and many pairs of boots, oh yes, and a wife. Some may say they know how the story ends. You will only find out if you read for yourself!2. Heaven Help Us - The story began whilst I sat in a car on a journey to the East Coast, telling tales to keep my children occupied, because their technology was out of signal range. The signal on the East Coast is limited. My daughter had asked what is more important, money or love? Then along came a story, my children liked it when it was told verbally, but I realise now, when the words are on the paper - some stories are meant to be told aloud, others are to be read. So, I ask Dear Adult reader that you inspect this story and decide for yourself whether you want to share it with a child or young person. It is up to you. 3. The Sparrow & a Dog - The Writer for a time had to do a school run, between 2015 to 2017, which incurred a long drive, down through the back roads of the East Riding. The roads often reminded her of the streets of the East Hull, and there was a house that reminded her of her childhood. On this one particular road that she travelled down daily, morning and night, she would often see birds flying low, pheasants walking casually, and even the odd vole and hedgehog trying to cross the road which were expected to be driven along at a range of 40mph to 60mph speed. This story is a little tragic.And my first ever children's tale:The Slimy Frog, I will leave this story to tell itself.
