  • Over the Stile:

    James Turner

What do you remember when you were six, ten, and twelve years of age? We are all unique with our own specific memories. OVER THE STILE relates experiences from my growing up years. One afternoon when I was six, I was standing on a ladder talking to my neighbors over the fence, and boom! To my surprise, the ladder collapsed. A broken arm is painful! Worse yet, when I was thirteen, I and a neighbor had one of the bloodiest fights ever seen in my neighborhood. We ripped each others' shirts off, and punched each other, while my parents cheered for me. The watching neighborhood kids were on my side too. You're invited to come and enjoy the journey with me down memory lane. May you be reminded of your own childhood days.

Ten-year-old Willie and his seven-year-old sister Melanie have taken their neighbor’s dog Buffy to the park. Melanie, who desperately wants a dog of her own, is highly motivated to prove to her parents and the dog’s owner that she is the perfect candidate to look after Mrs. Marsh’s Pomeranian. Having arrived at the dog park, the children released Buffy to play with the other dogs. When Willie went on an errand, Melanie was in charge of keeping an eye on Buffy. But, her attention was distracted momentarily by Red, an Irish setter who was playing Frisbee with his owner. When Melanie looked back, Buffy had disappeared. The story chronicles the children’s efforts to find Buffy. Meanwhile the gregarious Pomeranian who had no idea she was lost was busy following her new friend, Rusty the Doberman, down the street and away from the dog park. Buffy and Rusty romp through his neighborhood visiting people on his daily route. Buffy meets the delightful characters of Rust’s route: Ralph the Butcher, Claude the French Baker, and the attractive owner of La Mayson.
