  • The Higher Life: Its Reality, Experience, and Destiny

    James Baldwin Brown

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 30, 2018)
Excerpt from The Higher Life: Its Reality, Experience, and DestinyI send forth this book on The Higher Life, in the hope that it may help some, especially among the young, to hold fast their faith in the great facts and truths, which alone seem to me to make this life of ours worth living at all. The elder Mill, as we learn from the autobiography of his distinguished son, re jected all that is called religious belief. It does not surprise one to learn further, that he thought human life a poor thing at best, after the freshness of youth and Of unsatisfied curiosity had gone by. I fear that there is a large class of cultivated men and women among us who are falling into the same unbelief, and into the sadness which is its inevitable fruit. If what I have written should afford any help to such against this pressure of the times, the labour which it has cost will be amply repaid.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. James S. Brown

eBook (Stonewall Press, March 21, 2018)
Books for Young and Early School-Aged BoysThis is the first in a new series of children’s books, The Adventures of Jay and Gizmo. These books are aimed specifically at young and early school-aged boys. They are written based on the educational research into the factors that have been shown to play a role in increasing the probability that boys will develop an interest in reading at an early age.Educational research has shown that the number one predictor that children will experience long-term success in school is the level of reading readiness that they already have when they begin school. The research also shows that young boys that have been provided with books that have specific characteristics are likely to have a higher level of reading readiness when they begin school. These characteristics are:Books that have a male as the central character;Books that the boys actually own, even if they cannot yet read them by themselves;Books that contain action, adventure and/or problem-solving by boys;Books that portray the central character modeling behaviors such as reading, problem-solving, and searching for and applying knowledge;Books in which the vocabulary allows them to be read to boys by their parents in their early years, and by the boys themselves once they begin to read for themselves.
