  • Little Pink House: A True Story of Defiance and Courage

    Jeff Benedict

Hardcover (Grand Central Publishing, Jan. 26, 2009)
SOON TO BE A MOTION PICTURE STARRING CATHERINE KEENER THAT "BRINGS URGENCY TO A FASCINATING, UNDER-EXPLORED THEME." - THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Suzette Kelo was just trying to rebuild her life when she purchased a falling down Victorian house perched on the waterfront in New London, CT. The house wasn't particularly fancy, but with lots of hard work Suzette was able to turn it into a home that was important to her, a home that represented her new found independence. Little did she know that the City of New London, desperate to revive its flailing economy, wanted to raze her house and the others like it that sat along the waterfront in order to win a lucrative Pfizer pharmaceutical contract that would bring new business into the city. Kelo and fourteen neighbors flat out refused to sell, so the city decided to exercise its power of eminent domain to condemn their homes, launching one of the most extraordinary legal cases of our time, a case that ultimately reached the United States Supreme Court. In Little Pink House, award-winning investigative journalist Jeff Benedict takes us behind the scenes of this case -- indeed, Suzette Kelo speaks for the first time about all the details of this inspirational true story as one woman led the charge to take on corporate America to save her home."Passionate...a page-turner with conscience." -- Publishers Weekly"Catherine Keener nails the combination of anger, grace, and attitude that made Susette Kelo a nationally known crusader." -- Deadline Hollywood

  • Ninja: The Beginning

    Benedict Jacka

Paperback (HARPER COLLINS PUB. (UK), March 5, 2007)
Running away from home is usually a bad idea. However, Ignis, Allandra, and Michael have three good reasons for doing it. First, their father Vargas Havelock is a drug baron; second, he's thoroughly evil; and third, he expects them to join him in the family business before they get much older. Given all that, running away starts to look quite reasonable. But when Ignis and Allandra stage an escape during a holiday in Wales, taking Michael with them, things don't go to plan. Michael gets recaptured, and Ignis and Allandra nearly drown. When they wake up, they find they've been taken to a secret valley deep in the forest. A school is hidden there, built into the treetops, and it's filled with children studying to be ninjas. This is Rokkaku, and it's to become their home. And so Ignis and Allandra's new life begins. The ninjutsu training is hard, but the friends they find make up for it. Outside Rokkaku, though, Vargas is still looking for them. Sooner or later, Ignis and Allandra are going to have to face their father again ...and their brother too.

  • Tommy and The Bedbugs

    Benedict John

language (Benedict John, July 28, 2012)
A chance encounter with the 'monsters' beneath his bed on Christmas Eve, take the nine-year-old Tommy on a thrilling roller-coaster adventure that leads to the discovery of the 'real' Santa Clause!Action-packed and hilarious for kids and adults alike!A compelling and humorous short novel that brings together a cast of colourful charcters:•Tommy: A well-meant, but slightly spoilt 9-year old, who needs to be taught the true meaning of Christmas!•The Bedbugs: Iggy, Ziggy & Lou, whose diverse personalities make for instant comedy!•Santa: An ordinary guy, trying to hold down a very extraordinary job!•Rudolph: The infamous reindeer, whose fame and fortune have totally gone to his head!A charming tale, with a strong moral undertow, and heartfelt twist to the ending:Author, Benedict John: "From an early age, the whole concept of Santa Claus bothered me. It just didn't seem to be very well thought out. Why was this guy (Santa) getting in a sleigh and delivering presents all over the world every Christmas Eve? It is a lovely thought, but who was financing it? Where was he getting the presents? How were they being organised and and packaged? How did he get them all in one bag? How did he get around the whole world in one night? To me, as a very pragmatic child, none of this stacked up as a viable business plan (I couldn't imagine presenting it to Dragon's Den..!). There were endless missing details and flaws in the whole concept. I really wanted to buy into the myth of Santa, but there were just too many loose ends - nobody had really bothered to think it through! Thus the tale of Tommy and The Bedbugs started to germinate in my mind from about age 3 or 4, as I sought to find answers to the above questions in order to rationalise, and therefore make real the myth of Santa, and ultimately make it believable for the average child - and maybe for a few adults also!"
