She could hear the TV on downstairs. Her mother and father were watching some superhero show or another. Mai didn't like TV. She was much more interested in books. Especially exciting mysteries. She swiped her finger on the screen. The screen flashed as the page turned on the book she was reading. It was starting to get good. The three teenage investigators had tracked down the green ghost to the ruined, old mansion, the floorboards squeaking under their feet, the wind whistling through the old mansion's rooms. The boys had just seen the ghost pass through a nearby wall. They were creeping, creeping, creeping toward the door. One of the boys reached out his hand and---A thud sounded from her bedroom window.Mai jumped, almost sending her Kindle flying off the bed. She pulled the covers off her head and flipped on her nightstand lamp. Mai looked around her room, at her pink, 6-drawer dresser with the swivel mirror on top, past her large pile of stuffed animals that filled the entire corner of her room and over the bookshelf filled with Nancy Drew books and magic trick manuals. Her eyes focused on the window that looked out onto the backyard. With the dark night sky beyond, all Mai saw was a mirror image of her room. Mai squinted, but it was no use trying to see outside while her lamp was on.Thoughts of the green ghost flashed through her mind. Could it be? Mai laughed and shook her head. These books make you think such strange thoughts sometimes. But a ghost? That was just silly. There's no such thing as ghosts. Right? But what was it? A raccoon? A bird?Mai's room was on the second floor of her family's new suburban home in the little town of Wentworth. She had only lived here a month and was still getting used to the new sights and sounds of the house. It was different than busy New York City where she had been living. But her parents had said that the big city was too crowded and stuffy and they wanted to move to a quieter place where things weren't so hectic.Instead of car horns and yelling voices, Mai heard unfamiliar owl hoots and frog calls all night. It took awhile for Mai to get used to it, but it was getting easier. One thing that still got to her was a scary, old oak tree that stood outside her room and tap, tap, tapped on the window on windy nights. But tonight, it wasn't windy at all.Mai pushed her long, black hair out of her face and glanced again at the window. She knew that she was scaring herself, but she couldn't help but think there was something out there. Watching her.But that was ridiculous. She shrugged and picked her book back up. She couldn't get scared at every little thing anymore. She was almost 13 years old, a full on teenager. Getting scared at noises in the night was for little girls and Mai was trying hard not to be a little girl anymore.A loud, squeaky sound like her room's rusty door hinge came from outside the window. Mai cringed and set her Kindle down beside her. She looked at the window and her reflection stared back. She would have to turn off her light to get any glimpse outside, but Mai wasn't about to do that now.
