I simply loved this book." - Novella Reviews'If I had known how much my life was about to change, I would have spent that last day in Pembina differently. I would have said goodbye to my friends and visited the places that reminded me of Mama, especially the elm tree where she was buried. I would have sat at her grave telling her how much I missed her, and that I’d come back someday to visit. But since I didn’t know any of that, I spent most of that day with Freda Two-Feathers, who was a half-breed like me.Half-breed.Papa hated that word.“You are Métis,” he’d say. “You are not half of anything, Claire.”'While the Civil War rages far away, Claire and her father set out on a journey from the Dakota Territory, hoping to catch up to the large caravan of Métis fur traders that left the day before. Their destination? The bustling city of St. Paul, where Papa wishes to open a photography studio. But with only Bone Bag, their one-horned ox, to pull their squeaky cart, they soon realize they may have to make their treacherous journey alone. Braving bad weather, packs of wolves, dangerous river crossings, starvation and exhaustion, can Claire and her father survive the deeply rutted ox cart trails?"The story creates a vivid picture of Claire and her father and of the land through which they travel. It pulls the reader into their world, feeling their emotions, and rejoicing and crying with them. The ending sends a strong message about survival and sets the groundwork for the sequel. • Pokey Goes to America

    C. J. Arnold

Paperback (Strategic Book Publishing, June 27, 2012)
Pokey is a small gray mouse with a large purple nose. He likes to poke into everything because he's so very curious. In the historical children's book Pokey Goes to America, the story begins in 1700s England. A sailing ship is being loaded at the dock where Pokey and his mother are gathering food for supper. Although instructed to stay close, Pokey's curiosity leads him to follow the men loading the ship. He finds the galley, has a large lunch, falls asleep and awakens to the rolling of the ship at sea on its way to America. Pokey investigates all aspects of ship life and his adventures lead him to nearly being washed overboard! He overhears some children explaining why their parents are making this long and dangerous voyage. When the ship arrives in America, Pokey finds a home in a stable and ponders whether he should go home to his mother or stay and explore this new country. Perhaps his mother would like to join him in America, where everything is so interesting! C. J. Arnold is a retired teacher who lives in Dallas, Texas. Her inspiration for writing the book: "The lack of patriotism and decline in factual history being taught has encouraged me to try to at least to have something for my own great-grandchildren." She has just completed two more children's books including a sequel, Pokey Goes to Philadelphia, set in 1776, and Stephen's Magic Pillow, about a Pilgrim child and his family travelling to a new life in America.
