  • The Butterfly Book: A Popular Guide to a Knowledge Edge of the Butterflies of North America

    W. J. Holland

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Dec. 3, 2017)
Excerpt from The Butterfly Book: A Popular Guide to a Knowledge Edge of the Butterflies of North AmericaIf I shall succeed in this book in creating a more wide-spread interest in the world of insect life and thereby diverting attention in a measure from the persecuted birds, which I love, but which are in many species threatened with extinction by the too eager attentions which they are receiving from young naturalists, who are going forth in increased numbers with shot-gun in hand, I think I Shall render a good service to the country.I flatter myself that l have possessed peculiar facilities for the successful accomplishment of the undertaking l have proposed to myself, because of the possession of what is admitted to be un doubtedly the largest and most perfect collection of the butterflies of North America in existence, containing the types of W. H. Ed wards, and many of those of other authors. 1 have also enjoyed access to all the other great collections of this country and Europe, and have had at my elbow the entire literature relating to the subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Miss. Gilbert's Career: An American Story

    J. G. Holland

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Sept. 16, 2017)
Excerpt from Miss. Gilbert's Career: An American StoryDr. Theophilus gilbert was in a hurry. He had been in a hurry all night. He had been in a hurry all the morning. While the village of Crampton was asleep, he had amputated the limb of a young man ten miles distant, attended a child in convulsions on his way home, and assisted in introducing into existence an infant at the house of his next-door neighbor - how sad an exist ence - how terrible a life - neither he nor the poor mother, widowed but a month, could imagine.Dr. Gilbert had taken an early breakfast, and still the black Canadian pony, with his bushy head down, the long hair over his eyes, and his shaggy fetlocks splashed with mud, flew around the village of Crampton, bearing the doctor in his gig, and stopping here and there at the houses of his patients without the straightening of a rein, as if the pony knew quite as well as the doctor where the sick people were, and had a private interest in the busi ness.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
