  • Scouting For Boys

    Robert Baden Powell

    Paperback (bnpublishing.com, Feb. 10, 2014)
Scouting For Boys was written by Robert Baden-Powell, Lieutenant General in the British Army and founder of the international Scouting movement, Scouting for Boys is one of the most influential manuals for youth ever published. First printed in 1908, it remains an all-time bestseller in the English-speaking world, second only to the Bible. The original blueprint and "self-instructor" of the Boy Scout Movement, Scouting for Boys is a fascinating fusion of "yarns and pictures," an irresistible mixture of nationalistic narrative, tracker legend, and quotations from Baden-Powell's own autobiography and the popular adventure fiction of Rudyard Kipling, James Fenimore Cooper, and Alexander Dumas. The book provides practical advice on lighting fires, building boats and stalking animals, alongside proper Victorian-era education on chivalry and manners, self-discipline and improvement, and above all, good citizenship. Expounding upon the topics intrinsic to the life of a scout-tracking, woodcraft, camp life, endurance, patriotism, and more-this classic is essential for anyone interested in popular culture and the history of scouting and youth education.A bit dated but historically important.About the Author - Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell 1857 - 1941. British military officer whose love of the outdoors led to the creation of the Scouting movement..Author - Robert Baden-Powell.

  • Scouting For Girls: Adapted from Girl Guiding

    Robert Baden-Powell

language (Loose Cannon Ent., Sept. 2, 2016)
In 1899 while serving in the 2nd Boer War, Robert Baden-Powell penned his sixth military book, Aids To Scouting. But what completely surprised Baden-Powell was that his book was eagerly taken up by teachers and youth groups to help organize outdoor activities and sport. He eventually embraced the idea of adapting his work into a new youth-oriented book, Scouting for Boys (1908) which went on to become an international phenomenon. In 1910, in response to numerous requests he expanded the movement by founding the Girl Guides Association, a similar outdoor-oriented organization for girls. Girl Guiding was originally written in 1918, and this ebook was created from a US 1925 edition, hence the US title Scouting for Girls (the Girl Guides was mainly a term used in Britian and its Commonwealth). This 1918 manual contains sections on Girl Scout ranks, skills to be learned and merit badges. Various other activities and information is presented in a well organized manner—from Games/activities, to minor first aid, sewing and cooking, to knots, signalling and other campcrafts. Anyone interested in the history of Girl Scouting will definitely want to read this interesting and fascinating book.(NOTE - This very early Girl scouts manual is only preceded by 2 smaller pamphlets by Baden-Powell and the first british Girl Scout manual The Handbook for Girl Guides or How Girls Can Help to Build Up the Empire....a fascinating document and of considerable historical note.)
