    Howard R. Garis

Uncle Wiggily Longears is the main character of a series of children's books by American author Howard Roger Garis, seventy-nine of which were published in the author's lifetime. Garis began writing the stories for the "Newark News" in 1910. Uncle Wiggily, an engaging elderly rabbit, is lame from rheumatism. Whenever he goes anywhere, he always relies on what Garis describes as "his candy-striped walking cane" -- a cane striped red and white like a peppermint candy cane. The books are illustrated by August Lenox.

  • Umboo, the Elephant by Howard R. Garis, Fiction, Fantasy & Magic, Animals

    Howard R. Garis

    Hardcover (Aegypan, July 1, 2008)
Lost!"I can find my way back again, after I have knocked over a tree for myself," he thought to himself. "It will be easy."While the elephant boy passed many trees with palm nuts, not until he found an extra-large tree did he put his head up against it. He pushed with all his might. Then over it went, the roots pulling loose from the soft, wet ground. "Ah, ha! That's the way to do it," laughed Umboo, tearing off a large branch. "I'll take this back to the herd with me!"Perhaps it was the steamy fog, rising all around him, that puzzled Umboo. And most certainly he was puzzled -- for, when he had been walking quite a distance, he suddenly stopped and listened."This is strange," he said to himself. "I don't hear any elephants. And I ought to be back with the herd now!"

  • Dick Hamilton's Football Team; or, A Young Millionaire on the Gridiron

    Howard R. Garis

Hardcover (The Goldsmith Publishing Company, March 15, 1912)
Dick Hamilton's Football Team; or, A Young Millionaire on the Gridiron. Howard R. Garis. The Goldsmith Publishing Company. 1912. 269 pages. From the author's preface: My Dear Boys: In writing this, the fourth volume of the "Dick Hamilton Series," telling of the doings of the young millionaire on the gridiron, I have had one particular thought in mind. That was to make as interesting a story as possible for you. Now that it is finished, it is for you to say whether or not you like it. I trust I may be pardoned if I say I hope that you will. When Dick returned to the Kentfield Military Academy after his vacation on his steam yacht, he found the football team of which he was a member, in poor shape. In fact, the eleven was laughed at by other military schools, one of which refused to accept a challenge that Kentfield sent. How Dick hired a coach from Princeton and one from Yale, and how they "whipped" the team into shape, how championship material was made from them, you will find told of in this book. There is also related how Dick worked to save his father's wealth by getting possession of certain electric road stock, which was held by a crabbed old man who disliked cadets and football. Of course, there is also something about the bulldog, Grit, in this book, and about Uncle Ezra Larabee, and the doings of our hero's friends and enemies are fully set forth. Again expressing the hope that you will find this story interesting, and that you will care to hear more of Dick Hamilton, I remain, Yours cordially, Howard R. Garis.
