In 1916, Kephart dramatically expanded the book into two volumes to include wagon camping and semi-permanent base camp construction. These are the equivalent of modern car camping - just a couple of notches down from a motel stay. The 1910 edition is the "purest" of all the editions of "The Book of Camping and Woodcraft". According to the author's foreword this book covers: "outfitting, making camps, dressing and keeping game and fish, camp cookery, forest travel, how to avoid getting lost, and what to do if one does get lost, living off the country, what the different species of trees are good for (from a camper s viewpoint), backwoods handicrafts in wood, bark, skins and other raw materials, the treatment of wounds and other injuries, and some other branches of woodcraft that may be of service when one is far from shops and from hired help.[Note: this pre-1923 book has been converted from its original format and may contain an occasional defect from the conversion process or from the original publication.]

In the introductory part of Camping and Woodcraft, Horace Kephart stated that, "My one aim in writing this little book is to make it of practical service to those who seek rest or sport in the wilderness, or whose business calls them thither." The writer moreover defined the inclusions of this book, "In the following chapters I offer some suggestions on outfitting, making camps, dressing and keeping game and fish, camp cookery, forest travel, how to avoid getting lost, and what to do if one does get lost, living off the country, what the different species of trees are good for (from a camper's viewpoint), backwoods handicrafts in wood, bark, skins and other raw materials, the treatment of wounds and other injuries, and some other branches of woodcraft that may be of service when one is far from shops and from hired help." Horace Sowers Kephart was a travel writer and librarian, most popular as the writer of Our Southern Highlanders of his experiences in the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina and the traditional outdoors reference book Camping and Woodcraft. Horace Sowers Kephart was born in East Salem, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Iowa. He was the director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library in St. Louis, Missouri between the years 1890 and 1903. During these times, Horace also drafted a guide book about camping and shooting jaunts. At an earlier time, Horace was also employed as a librarian at Yale University and spent some considerable time in Italy as a wage earner of a prestigious collector of books in the United States. He penned of his life experiences in a sequence of articles in the publication Field and Stream. These articles were gathered into his primary guide book, Camping and Woodcraft, which was first released in 1906.

The great world outside his mountains knows almost as little about him as he does of it; and that is little indeed. News in order to reach him must be of such widespread interest as fairly to fall from heaven; correspondingly, scarce any, incidents of mountain life will leak out unless they be of sensational nature, such as the shoot ing of a revenue ofiicer in Carolina, the massacre of a Virginia court, or the outbreak of another feud in bloody Breathitt.
