  • The Settler

    Herman Whitaker

    language (, Sept. 14, 2013)
Carter, the central character, is a handsome specimen of manhood. He may be a farmer, but he’s also a cut above his neighbors in intelligence and leadership skills. He doesn’t just complain about the railroad. He begins thinking like a railroad tycoon, and the novel traces his emergence as a man whose daring and cunning make him a match for even the mighty Canadian Pacific. The story is a romance as well. But as the narrator points out, unlike love stories that end with the marriage of an unpolished cowboy and a pretty schoolmarm, this one starts where they leave off. A sweet romance in the opening chapters brings Carter and Helen to the altar, but the honeymoon doesn’t last long.

  • Cross Trails: The Story of One Woman in the North Woods

    Herman Whitaker

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Sept. 16, 2017)
Excerpt from Cross Trails: The Story of One Woman in the North WoodsStepping out into the street, she vented her relief in a sigh that was quite premature, for in the looks of the three lumberjacks who had just stepped on the porch was no hint of the consideration displayed inside. Huge hulks of men, their natural roughness was accentuated by their dress, the moose-skin coats, moccasins, thick arctic socks pulled on over heavy blue overalls, which added to their bulk and gave them the uncouth look and rolling gait of so many bears. While the faces of two displayed merely the coarse animalism of the type, in the third this was adulterated by an expression of vicious cunning and fired by a certain ferocity that glowed in his curiously red, lidless eyes. In pass ing they stared in her face, then turned and looked after. Replying to the third man's com ment, the other two burst out with hoarse guffaws that caused her to tingle with anger and shame.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
