The Return of Alfred

The Return of Alfred â A Funny and Intriguing Comedy Novel You'll Love to ReadHerbert Jenkins has pulled a real prank on his many fans when he published this book anonymously, simply signing it as âby the author of 'Patricia Brent, Spinster'â - a novel whose author has also enjoyed the status of anonymity. In fact, Jenkins went a step further with his little joke, claiming it was dedicated to âthose in many countries who have generously assumedâ to be the authors of the aforementioned novel. The Return of Alfred, however, is a very different book, and while Jenkins' humor is just as masterful, the premise of the novel closer resembles that of The Man Who Lost Himself, by Henry de Vere Stacpoole. As you read through it, however, you will find The Return of Alfred to be quite a unique spin off a similar idea. The plot has to do with a man named Smith, who returns from the Great War to find his old tedious life a tad more boring and uneventful than he remembered it. While wishing for something unusual and exciting to happen, he soon finds himself in Norfolk, where the butler of a country home recognizes him as the âlost Mr. Alfred,â the son of the house, who has been missing for quite a while.Wielding his storyline in a majestic and quite humorous way, Herbert Jenkins manages to integrate the ânew Alfredâ somewhat against his will into a life of friendship and misdoings, filled with all the excitement â and even romance â that Smith had felt were completely gone from his life. This is one book you'll definitely not regret reading. Its fun and intriguing plot line is matched only by the witty, playful manner in which Jenkins manages to move things along, and captivate all his readers in the process. You will thoroughly enjoy reading The Return of Alfred, and you may find the ending to be quite unexpected.
