    Henry van Dyke

    eBook (, Dec. 16, 2018)
"You know the story of the Three Wise Men of the East, and how they travelled from far away to offer their gifts at the manger-cradle in Bethlehem. But have you ever heard the story of the Other Wise Man, who also saw the star in its rising, and set out to follow it, yet did not arrive with his brethren in the presence of the young child Jesus? Of the great desire of this fourth pilgrim, and how it was denied, yet accomplished in the denial; of his many wanderings and the probations of his soul; of the long way of his seeking, and the strange way of his finding, the One whom he sought—I would tell the tale as I have heard fragments of it in the Hall of Dreams, in the palace of the Heart of Man."

At this time of the year my family knows that I will read again my Christmas treasury of books and ponder the wondrous words of the authors. First will be the Gospel of Luke even the Christmas story. This will be followed by A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, and finally, The Mansion by Henry Van Dyke. President Thomas S. Monson John Weightman wanted the best of everything. He surrounded himself with beauty and riches, and was very careful with how he spent his money. No pennies in beggars hats, he liked to say. Until one night he dreamed that he died . . . Finding himself with a group of travelers dressed in white, John joins them on their journey to the Celestial City where each individual will be rewarded with a mansion based on treasures set aside. Thinking that his mansion will be the most grand, John Weightman learns what it truly means to lay up treasures in heaven. The Mansion is a classic tale told at Christmastime that illustrates the importance of giving unselfishly.

  • The Mansion, ILLUSTRATED BY ELIZABETH SHIPPEN GREEN

    Henry Van Dyke

Hardcover (Harper & Brothers Publishers, Aug. 16, 1911)
"The Mansion," a classic short novel by Henry van Dyke, presents an important message that reminds us of the true spirit of giving. In "The Mansion," author Henry van Dyke presents a wealth of good advice about how we can grow through giving--all wrapped in an easy-to-read, entertaining story. If people of today would believe in and practice the ideals set forth in "The Mansion," much of the sorrow, violence, and civil disorder would disappear from our world. War would be nearly impossible, and a new era would begin. While it sets forth nothing new, "The Mansion" emphasizes the timeless ideals of sympathy, self-sacrifice, and good old-fashioned kindness. It emphasizes that the only great gifts are those in which the giver forgets him or herself, "The Mansion" is a must-read every Christmas, right along with Dicken's Christmas Carol.
