Will's brother has gone off to war and used to be his protector, but now his father takes all his frustrations out on Will. The old neighbor keeps and eye out for Will when Will goes out hunting, as he knows what Will's father is like. When Will's father goes too far the neighbor steps in and teaches the father a lesson, just before a tragic ending to Will's fathers life.
