    Gilbert H. Gilbert

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 5, 2018)
Excerpt from The Subways and Tunnels of New York: Methods and Costs, With an Appendix on Tunneling Machinery and Methods and Tables of Engineering DataThe ferry systems from New Jersey, Long Island and Staten Island have reached the limit of their capacity. The East River bridges furnish relief to the situation, but are by no means sufficient. The elevated and surface car systems of New York and Brooklyn have been extended to their practical limit. With surface, above - surface, and over-water means of transit incapable of further expansion, the only alternative was to make use of the subterranean and subaqueous territory underlying and adjacent to the greater city. The. Subways, and sub aqueous and land tunnels, in and about New York City maybe considered as simply a beginning of a vast system of subsurface transportation which must develop with the growth of population.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • One Hundred Folk-Songs From Many Countries

    Henry Franklin Gilbert

Paperback (Forgotten Books, March 23, 2018)
Excerpt from One Hundred Folk-Songs From Many CountriesThis little book has been prepared with the desire to bring before the school boys and girls of America some Of the beautiful melodies of popular tradition. An acquaintance with the world's folk-songs educates and ennobles the musical sense, and unconsciously develops in the mind an appreciation of the elements Of musical form. In the preparation of this collection several thousand folk-songs have been examined, and much thought has been taken that the songs which are here presented shall be characteristic and truly representative Of the folk music Of the country from which they come. As the book is intended for use principally in the schools, the editor has studied to make the arrangements eminently practicable for this purpose. In harmonizing these folk melodies care has also been taken that the harmony used may not conflict with the spirit Of the original melody. The original words have been used in many cases, and where translations or adaptations have been made, it has been with the earnest desire to reproduce the spirit Of the original as faithfully as possible. In the case Of the original words having been lost, or being unsuited for a book of this nature, new words have been written, with the aim of expressing as nearly as possible the mood of the melody.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
