  • William's Nine Lives: A Story for Children

    Joseph Martin Hopkins

Paperback (Dawn Valley Press, Feb. 22, 2017)
"Johnny and Sue thought Tuesday would never come. That was the day they were to take their first train ride—all by themselves, too! Not only that, but they were going to spend ten whole days at Grandpa’s farm! They loved to visit the farm. For Grandma would let them hunt eggs in the hay mow, and Grandpa would let them ride on the tractor. And they could hug the soft, wooly lambs and let the baby calves suck their fingers. Besides, there were Grandma’s wonderful fried chicken dinners and delicious cherry pies! And Grandpa’s exciting bedtime stories! They could hardly wait!" Most of today’s children have never visited a farm and have no notion of daily chores or of picking vegetables anywhere but in the supermarket. Children need to know that without farmers there would be no food. They need to know that milk doesn’t come from square cardboard containers in the supermarket cooler. Joe’s book will introduce them to a way of life that is as rewarding as it is difficult, and it may make them more appreciative of what is set in front of them at supper, before their story time and bed.

  • Black robe peacemaker, Pierre de Smet

    Joseph G. E Hopkins

    Hardcover (P.J. Kenedy, March 15, 1958)
MORE THAN a hundred years ago, a Belgian Jesuit, Father Pierre De Smet, set out for the mountain country of the Flathead Indians. It was the beginning of pioneering exploits that rivaled those of Daniel Boone, of writings and maps that guided settlers through the wilderness. Above all, he went to tell the red men of the white man's God. During his time the great Indian wars were fought. The Sioux, the Arapahoes, the Cheyennes, all were on the warpath. They resented the encroachment of the white man on Indian territory and his broken promises to them. The United States army could not subdue these fierce warriors; government agents were afraid to approach them. There was only one man whom the Indians trusted: Father De Smet. The government appealed to him for help, and thus began his role as peacemaker. Fearlessly he visited the warring tribes and worked out settlements with them. The courageous priest pushed on even to the camp of Sitting Bull, who had sworn to kill any white man who crossed his path, and persuaded him to come to terms. It was no fault of Father De Smet's that in the end his beloved Indians were betrayed and the missions taken from the Black Robes. He himself labored, prayed, fought for justice for the red man. Thomas Hart Benton said of him in Congress that "Father De Smet has done more for Indian welfare and keeping them in peace and friendship with the United States than an army with banners."

  • "Makers of America". John Winthrop, First Governor of the Massachusetts Colony

    Joseph Hopkins Twichell

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Feb. 3, 2016)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867.Also in this Book The history of Native Americans in the Americas commenced tens of thousands of years ago with the settlement by the Paleo-Indians. A wide variety of cultures existed during this era, and subsequent contacts with Europeans had profound impacts on their history. In the United States, the Archaic period lasted until 1000 BC, including a major culture of Mound builders, whose territory stretched from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The Post-Archaic stage includes the Formative, Classic and Post-Classic stages. From the arrival of Europeans in the early 16th through 19th centuries, the population of Native Americans in North America declined through: epidemic diseases, violence and warfare at the hands of explorers and colonists, displacement from ancestoral lands, and internal warfare. In Central America the key civilizations were the Aztec and Mayan Empires. The Aztec Empire began as an alliance of three Nahua altepetl city-states: Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan, which ruled the area in and around the Valley of Mexico from 1428 until the Spanish conquistadores under Hernán Cortés defeated them (1521). The Maya Mesoamerican civilization was noted for its hieroglyphic script, as well as for its art, architecture, mathematics, calendar, and astronomical system. In South America, the Norte Chico civilization in Peru is the oldest civilization in the Americas and while development was interrupted by Portuguese and Spanish colonization, and a demographic collapse ensued, the continent's mestizo and indigenous cultures remain distinct from those of the colonizers. This was one of the first six independent civilizations in the world, being contemporaneous with the Egyptian pyramids.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades.
