    James Grant

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Feb. 10, 2019)
Excerpt from Joseph Jenkins, Vol. 2 of 3: Or Leaves From the Life of a Literary ManIt was, as has been just remarked, established on the ruins of The Brilliants, in the com mencing year of the present century, and can consequently boast of the very respectable age of forty-two. It was set on foot by a band of the choicest spirits then in the metropolis, who were anxious to have some fixed place in which they could nightly meet for purposes of harm less hilarity, and where in the spirit of innocent banter they might speak of each other with unrestrained freedom of remark. They were also, on the spur of the moment, to get up ridiculous charges against each other; and the party preferring the charge wsa expected to make, with all due gravity, a lengthened speech, as able and ingenious as possible, in support of it. Witnesses were to be called to substantiate the various counts contained in the indictment.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Romance of War, Vol. 1 of 3: Or the Highlanders in SpainNotwithstanding the numerous volumes which have been given to the public relative to the glorious operations of the British Army, for rescuing Portugal and Spain from the grasp of the invader, the Author of this work flatters himself that it will not be found deficient in novelty or ih terest. He acknowledges that, according to prece dent, scenes and incidents have been introduced into it which are purely imaginary, and whether he ought to apologize for these, or to make a merit of them, he must leave his readers to decide, ac cording to their individual tastes and predilections.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Shall I Win Her? The Story of a Wanderer, Vol. 1 of 3

    James Grant

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Jan. 18, 2018)
Excerpt from Shall I Win Her? The Story of a Wanderer, Vol. 1 of 3Captain Douglas and his party of High landers were somewhat quaint in aspect too, their uniform not being precisely such as would pass muster at Aldershott or St. James's Park. Their bonnets and plaids, red coats, and other bravery, had been replaced by a costume more suitable to a warfare in the wild bush of the Cape Colony. They still retained their tartan trews, but wore under their pipeclayed cross-belts short blue blouses of canvas, with felt shoes, and pouches of un tanned hide. They had forage-caps with large square leather peaks, and all were weather beaten and service-like fellows.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
