Kyra, a young girl from Edmonton in Canada, is staying with her grandparents for the summer in the small village of Chideock, Dorset, which becomes the setting for this fantastical tale of an enchanted scarecrow called Nellie. Nellie, breaking with tradition, starts up a friendship with Kyra, whose generosity with chocolate and lemonade goes a long way in cementing their fondness for each other. After overcoming the shock of meeting a walking, talking Scarecrow, Kyra soon learns of Nellie's amazing existence and his important position of taking care of the animals in and around the Chideock countryside. From Black Covert to Bluebell Mead, Nellie (under the watchful eyes of his master, the Nage) protects all species of animals from harm. When this status-quo is threatened by the prospect of a new bypass however, Kyra has to trust in her grandparents and sort out a certain mischievous young man by the name of Billy Chalmers in order to save the animals of The Clump and Chideock Hide Hospital.
