  • Modern Petrography: An Account of the Application of the Microscope to the Study of Geology

    George Huntington Williams

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Feb. 16, 2019)
Excerpt from Modern Petrography: An Account of the Application of the Microscope to the Study of GeologyRegular instruction in petrography has for some years past been given at Harvard and Columbia Colleges; more recently, the attempt has been made at the Johns Hopkins University to organize a petrographical laboratory, where, by lectures and practical work, graduate students of geology may secure a thorough acquaintance with all the methods and results of foreign investigators. The encouragement with which this experiment has already met seems to indicate that it fills a need. Nor are signs wanting that other American universities mean to follow this lead by introducing instruc tion in petrography among their courses.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Essentials of Biology Presented in Problems: By George William Hunter

    George William Hunter

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

  • The Way to Avoid the Centre of Our Violent Gales

    George William Blunt

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 5, 2019)
Excerpt from The Way to Avoid the Centre of Our Violent GalesThe dangers to a vessel in a Cyclone are three. The veering of the wind; the exces sive violence of it near the centre; and the sudden calms and shifts and awful sea at the centre. All these involve, as on well know, damage and loss by dismasting, straining, leaks, and distress of various kinds up to foundering; and you will find in the present Chapter ample rules to show you that if involved in a Cyclone, even with a fair wind, you should often heave to, not to approach the centre, or with a foul one that you should, if the weather possibly admits of It, stand back: that if you have to heave to, on will, if you take the right tack, have both the veerings of the wind, and the shift 0 it such, that you will always come up to it, and run no risk of being taken aback; while it hove to on the wrong one, you will certainly have the wind heading you off, and in all probability be taken aback if it shifts. Of the dangers in all these cases every seaman is aware, as for instance that of getting stern-way in a hurricane; and it is one, and not the least of the practical a plications of our Science, that there is scarw yet a case on record, in all the 10 s that ve been examined, where ships which have sufl'ered in a Cyclone might not ve escaped with far less lo if they could not have avoided the Cyclone, or perhaps without any, by due attention our rules; and we can pretty nearly demonstrate also, that many which have foundered must have done so from utter ignor ance of the danger they were running into!About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Elements of Biology: A Practical Text-Book Correlating Botany, Zoölogy, and Human Physiology

    George William Hunter

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Feb. 18, 2019)
Excerpt from Elements of Biology: A Practical Text-Book Correlating Botany, Zoölogy, and Human PhysiologyIf the work begins with the spring term, the introductory chap ters may be taken, then the seed and seedling, root, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit, reserving the treatment of the cell, simple plants, and the bacteria until the end of the term. This allows taking up the thread in the fall where it was dropped, with an introduction through the balanced aquarium and the hay infusion to the rela tions existing between plants and animals. The best order of topics in the fall seems to be protozoa, some simple metazoan, insects (taken while living insects may still be obtained), then such other groups of invertebrates as desired, the year's work again culmi nating with the vertebrates and biology as applied to the human animal.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
