  • English Synonymes Explained, in Alphabetical Order: With Copious Illustrations and Examples Drawn From the Best Writers

    George Crabb

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Dec. 24, 2017)
Excerpt from English Synonymes Explained, in Alphabetical Order: With Copious Illustrations and Examples Drawn From the Best WritersMy first object certainly has been to assist the philologicsl inquirer in ascertaining the force and comprehension of the English language; yet I should have thought my work but half completed had I made it a mere register of verbal dis tinctions. While others seize every opportunity unblush ingly to avow and zealously to propagate opinions destructive of good order, it would ill become any individual of con trary sentiments to shrink from stating his convictions, when called upon as he seems tobe by an occasion like that which has now ofi'ered itself. As to the rest, I throw myself on the indulgence of the public, conscious that this work will call for it in no small degree. Although I have ob tained their approbation on other occasions, yet it is not without some degree of difiidence that I appear before them on the present notwithstanding the favorable sentence which private friends have passed upon my work. • The Book of Knowledge: Or, an Explanation of Words and Things Connected with All the Arts and Sciences

    George Crabb

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
