  • The Bible in Spain: Or the Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments

    George Henry Borrow

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Oct. 13, 2017)
The Bible in Spain, Or the Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments, a book written by George Henry Borrow, is an account of the author's travels in Spain while in the country to sell copies of The Bible translated into Castilian.George Henry Borrow was a nineteenth century English author, best known for his travelogues. In 1835 Borrow was sent to Spain on an assignment as an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Here he spent five years and in doing so experienced a great deal of entertaining and challenging encounters, which he expertly recounts in this collection. As one of the few foreigners in Spain during the Carlist Civil War, Burrow was certainly an oddity in the country. Don Jorge was the name given to him by the locals, and he was both accepted by some and loathed by others. Borrow tells of his encounters with Gypsies, as well Spanish soldiers, women, and religious people, all of which lead to interesting episodes.Borrow is a writer of considerable talent and is able to progress the story's narrative effectively. The book is structured almost as a novel would be, divided into chapters and backed by a continuously progressing story. Borrow's greatest skill is his ability to bring people and places to life with his descriptive text. The author paints a vivid picture that will transport the reader to the Iberian Peninsula of the 1830s.As both a piece of entertainment and a record of his travels, George Burrow's The Bible in Spain, Or the Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments is a success. It is an effectively paced and wonderfully written book that can be enjoyed by all - and particularly those that enjoy travel literature.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. George Henry Borrow

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 23, 2010)
PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. (1851.) IN the following pages I have endeavoured to describe a dream, partly of study, partly of adventure, in which will be found copious notices of books, and many descriptions of life and manners, some in a very unusual form. The scenes of action lie in the British Islands. Pray be not displeased, gentle reader, if perchance thou hast imagined that I was about to conduct thee to distant lands, and didst promise thyself much instruction and entertainment from what I might tell thee of them. I do assQre thee that thou hast no reason to be displeased, inasmuch as there are no countries in the world less known by the British than these selfsame British Islands, or where more strange things are every day occurring, whether in road or street, house or dingle. The time embraces nearly the first quarter of the present century. This information, again, may perhaps be anything but agreeable to thee; it is a long time to revert to-but fret' noTable of Contents CONTENTS; CHAPTER I; Birth - My Father-Tamerlane-Ben Brain-Frencl~ Protestants - East; Anglia--Sorrow and Troubles-True Peace-A Beautiful Child-Foreign; Grave-Mirrors-Alpine Country-Emblems-Slow of Speech-The Jew; PAGE; -Strange Gestures • I; CHAPTER II; Barracks and Lodgings-A Camp-The Viper-A Delicate Child-Blackberry; Time-Meum and Tuum-Hythe-The Golgotha-Daneman's; Skull-Superhuman Stature-Stirring Times-The Sea-Bard 9; CHAPTER III; Pretty D : • ,-The Venerable Church-The Stricken Heart-Dormant; Energies-The Small Packet-Nerves-The Books-A Picture-Mountain-; like Billows-The Foot-Print-Spirit of De Foe-Reasoning Powers; -Terrors of God-Heads of the Dragons-High-Church Clerk-A; Journey-The Drowned Country 15; CHAPTER IV; Nocman Cross-Wide Expanse-Vive l'Empereur-Unpruncd Woods-Man; with the Bag-Froth and Conceit-I beg your Pardo
