  • The Happy Ladybug

    Sparrow

    Paperback (Sparrow, Jan. 12, 2014)
The Happy Ladybug is a picture book for preschool children. Your kid will have quite an adventure to spend a fun and exciting day with a happy ladybug. The happy ladybug is simply extraordinary; she has many places to visit and friends to play with. Why wait... have your kid enjoy The Happy Ladybug adventure for a day. __ Reviewed by Kristie Ingerto for Readers' Favorite - 5/5 Stars The Happy Ladybug by Sparrow is a cute children’s book with bright illustrations and words set to a catchy rhythm that will capture a child’s attention. The ladybug loves to fly and one day on her adventures she flies by a bear, talks with a mare, and meets a spider who has captured a butterfly. She rescues the butterfly and they both fly away together. After this, she visits some bumblebees and sees some maple trees and shoes. As nighttime comes, the ladybug finds a flower leaf to rest upon to prepare for her next day’s adventure. I really enjoyed reading The Happy Ladybug and it is a wonderful book to share with young children. The illustrations are beautiful as they are so vibrant and filled with detail. Children will love to point out different parts of the illustrations and identify the various animals and things. This book is written in rhyme for the most part, and therefore it flows nicely and is catchy, which will hold a child’s attention to the end. I see this book as being a popular one to use with preschool children to read and discuss and then even imagine and create what adventures the ladybug will have the next day. This can also be used as a nice comparison for children as each day is filled with new adventures. What better way to end a day than by laying down to rest and, before falling asleep, thinking back over the adventures of the day and looking forward to new adventures to come!
  • The Perfect Gift

    G. S. Sparrow

Paperback (Blue Mantle Pub, Oct. 1, 1998)
The Perfect Gift is a moving story about a nine-year-old boy, Andrew MacClean, who has a life-changing experience a few days before Christmas. In the days leading up to this experience, Andrew faces significant stresses and worries. For one thing, his father tells Andrew that he must buy presents for his loved ones with his own money. Meanwhile, Andrew continues to grieve his parents divorce and the death of his grandfather, Poppy. In the context of this private struggle, Andrew has a vision in the middle of the night that sets the stage for the rest of the story -- and for the rest of his life. Andrew awakens to a sound in the house. When he goes to investigate, he discovers that a boy about his own age is in the house. At first Andrew is alarmed and suspicious when the boy introduces himself as a friend. But Andrew quickly comes to trust the boy. After a while, the boy announces that he must leave, and that he may be able to return -- but only if Andrew does what he needs to do to make the boys return possible. As the stranger blends into the Christmas tree lights, he promises that he will return when Andrew has given the perfect gift. Andrew sees the boy essentially disappear into a mysterious blue Christmas tree ornament that was not on the tree before. In the aftermath of his experience, Andrew learns that there is another story -- one that only his stepmother, Mary, knows about, that provides important clues to the meaning of his vision. Mary decides to tell Andrew the story of her fathers remarkable experience in France during the invasion of Normandy that accounts for the presence of the sapphire blue Christmas tree ornament. Keeping his nighttime experience a secret, Andrew then sets to discover what a perfect gift is.
