It was like some shadowy pantomime: The dark mouthof an alleyway thrown into murky relief by the rays of adistant street lamp...the swift, forward leap of a skulkingfigure...a girl's form swaying and struggling in the man'sembrace. Then, a pantomime no longer, there came a halfthreatening, half triumphant oath; and then the girl's voice, quiet, strangely contained, almost imperious:โNow, give me back that purse, please. Instantly!โ Theman, already retreating into the alleyway, paused to flingback a jeering laugh.โSay, youse've got yer nerve, ain't youse!โThe girl turned her head so that the rays of the streetlamp, faint as they were, fell full upon her, disclosing asweet, oval face, out of which the dark eyes gazedsteadily at the man.
