  • Snow: Learning for the Fun of it

    Frank B. Edwards, John Bianchi

Paperback (Bungalo Books, Oct. 1, 1992)
By combining a wealth of factual information about snow with the cartoon illustrations of John Bianchi, this book serves up science in a painless way that both kids and adults will love. Bianchi and author Frank B. Edwards examine snow from dozens of perspectives, keeping their approach light and the facts interesting. Their explanation of snowflake formation is accompanied by a sidebar about the meteorological pioneer who devoted his lifetime to photographing snowflakes. The movement of glaciers is introduced with an illustration of an advancing ice-sheet creeping along the main street of a city, eroding office towers instead of mountains. After explaining how animals adapt to snow, the book offers a blueprint of the ultimate winter beast - the long-eared snow scooter. Advice on tracking species in the snow includes abominable snowmen as well as rabbits and birds. After thoroughly racing how snow has affected the planet and how people have learned to cope with its inevitable presence (through such inventions as the snow shovel, skiis and the igloo), the book presents a romp through the snow hall of fame, a useful collection of snow trivia that is guaranteed to delight readers.

  • Bug

    Frank B Edwards, John Bianchi

Paperback (Pokeweed Press, March 1, 2006)
Twelve-year old Bug is penniless and on the move again. Thanks to her dad's obsessive entrepreneurial streak, she finds herself fleeing the city under cover of darkness in search of a new hometown. Her arrival in rural Tichburg is especially noteworthy because her father has staked their future on a decrepit dump truck fill with unmatched running shoes that he plans to sell at Tichurg's Harvest Fair.Luckily one of their first customers is Frogger, an easy-going country kid who convinces his skeptical new friend that there really can be life in the country -- if she can adapt to a different lifestyle. While her father busies himself with new ventures, Bug settles in to rural life with an overactive curiousity about everyone and everything in town.

  • Snug as a Big Red Bug

    Frank B Edwards, John Bianchi

Library Binding (Perfection Learning, April 1, 1999)
Poor Red Bug doesn't know anything about the cold wind and snow winter. His friends ask him, Red Bug, Red Bug, Where will you go? Winter is coming, With cold wind and snow. But the animals who are warning him of the changing season are not keen to let him burrow into their warm winter coats. Each potential hibernation site (feathers, fur, wool and hair) belongs to a reluctant host who sends the bug away again. Finally, Red Bug finds a perfect spot that bothers no one and the book ends happily with him snoring away in front of a fireplace. (Yes, you guessed it, as snug as a bug in a rug.) The book's rhyming pattern is a wonderful reading device for developing readers and the bug's search provides a playful look at the way various animal's adapt to the cold. Youngsters love to chant the text with or without the book in hand.
